Awesome embark site, need ideas
« on: September 05, 2009, 08:36:19 am »

After a few month vacation from dwarf fortress, I decide to gen up a new world.  I load up the location finder, then embark on my map.  I then noticed something odd.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As you can see, it would appear as if the magma pipe, river, and chasm are almost directly on top of each other, which to say the least is a rather interesting arrangement.  Anyone have any ideas of what I can do with this?  I was thinking of maybe draining the magma out of the pipe into the chasm, then running water from the river directly above that to make an obsidian waterfall of sorts, but that doesn't seem nearly interesting enough.

Put a floor on the chasm and fill it with magma. then fill the magma pipe with water and make the river a chasm.

That could be fun, fairly easy too.

Well, first of all you give us the world gen so we can perform our own sordid experiments on it. :)

This stuff?  Sorry, I've never actually done this before.

Hmm, don't want to hijack the topic, but how do you gen a world?
I assume you do it from Generate World  with Parameters, but when I tried it with another world, I didn't get the location I wanted.

Data > init > world_gen.txt

You can put the parimeters in there :)

Hmmm... I say you make a river of magma that drains into the chasm. For starters, at least.

Mine the pipe open, make lake above magma, so the water once it touches the bottom of the hole evaporates, causing a huge steam canon.

Use pumps to pump water and magma to the top of the map (build a tower of up/down staircases and two separate rooms spanning half the map, pump water and magma up then stop pumps and let gravity drip them down over the pipe), then use it to make a raw obsidian tower to the top of the map over the magma pipe. Carve it out and move ALL living facilites into it. Bonus points if you make some magma lakes because honestly there's never a situation where you can have too much magma. Engrave the entire thing too just for style.

Actually, if you wanted you could theoretically create a completely internally self sustained biodome of a fortress in a water/magma cast obsidian tower because it counts as natural rock and can be muddied for irrigation/tower caps. I'd make the barracks and the trade depot at the entry level, personally because I'm lazy I'd channel out around the magma pipe itself and start my tower's foundations underground so I wouldn't need to bother with pumping magma up the tower for metalworking. I'd also keep the farms on a lower level for easier irrigation. Tower cap farm could make up a few levels, probably above or below the normal farms. You'd still have to tunnel around for minerals.

If you want to get the chasm involved, after you've built the obsidian tower and have moved in, shift focus to clearing out the chasm, then build a floor on the bottom level and use scaffolds to engrave THE ENTIRE THING. Put expensive statues and other works of art throughout the place.

Could make for an interesting fort if you've got some bauxite for the pumps and the patience to build a megaconstruction in order to build another megaconstruction.

Drain the magma pipe into the chasm, enlarge, cast a obsidian tower inside it to use as your entire fort. Then refill the pipe.
My favorite fort is like that.

That's the best part, I have bauxite too, so anything goes.

I think I may go with your idea for engraving and flooring off the entire chasm, but instead of "clearing it out" with dwarves, I think I'll use "other means" (dump magma in it, then dump water on the magma to make tons of scalding hot steam).  Then, I'll mine out the obsidian (for other purposes, I'll have a ton) and I'll refill the chasm with magma partway.  Then I can kind of build my fort through the chasm using a system of bridges.  If anyone chooses to invade, I can just trap them on one of the large bridges, then open up the river's floodgates, or, if I'm lazy, drop them in the magma.

Well, first of all you give us the world gen so we can perform our own sordid experiments on it. :)

:edit:  if you make anything legendary, I expect screenshots.  I shall be doing the same.

Dammit, after quite a while digging, I have determined that the magma pipe isn't where I thought it was.  I'll make up for it by making a massive obsidian tower.

Now this might not seem very impressive, as it seems like everyone and their dog has made one at least once.  The thing is, all the ones I've seen are outdoors, which I consider very undwarfy, and the creators should be ashamed.  Mine will be completely underground and surrounded by magma (underground).  It shall be my noble quarters.

This will be but a small part of my fortress however, I am intent on making this the most impressive dwarf fortress ever seen on the forums.  None of this "above ground" nonsense that you see in other forts.

Above ground "nonsense" can be incredibly impressive if on a large enough scale.  Due to the methods of construction it is actually more impressive.

I like looking at megaprojects though regardless of what they are.  Proceed.
