I really liked flow, despite it's lack of any sort of introduction, instruction, or save feature.

I got to the second form, then decided that enough was enough.

Well, I've been working on an incredibly simple sim-style df-themed game if you'd care to try it...

Other than that, I second Stranded 2 and NetHack.  Cortex Command isn't really free, but there's a good demo available if you'd prefer something more along the lines of action/shooter game.  Liberal Crime Squad (Bay12Games :P) is a lot of fun too, although I've yet to really understand the full game...

I'll do that... I haven't played for a little while, and I never really did get very far though, so don't expect anything interesting :P

Ground control has been released for free here, but you'll have to fill out a form with personal info (so in a sense they still make money ;))
