Any good freeware games
« on: September 04, 2009, 10:49:06 pm »

I'm not really looking for anything special, but I do enjoy playing some lesser grade games while my main computer indexes and scans for viruses, does anyone know of any good downloadable freeware games?

Once tried to conquer Earth, and succeeded! Too bad it got really, really boring, really, really fast.

One day, we shall all look back on this, and laugh. Sorry about the face, by the way, and the legs, and the eyes, and the arms. In fact, sorry 'bout the whole body.

The exile series is going strong. It just got a face lift and a name change.

If adventure games like monkey island are your cup of tea, you might want to try Five days a stranger, Seven days a skeptic, Trilbies notes and Six days a sacrifice. They're pretty good. You can find them over on Fullyramblomatic.

Yes! I highly recommend the Urquan Masters. It is a freeware remake of Star Control 2, which is perhaps one of the best games ever made. Real-time combat, unique gameplay, great humor, great music, excellent storyline.

Highly recommended.

Spelunky, A sidescroller cave adventuring game with some references to indiana jones
Gang Garrison 2, A sidescroller TF2 demake.
Warzone 2100 Resurrection Project (somewhat high system reqs in comparison to other games), A Real Time Strategy game with pretty low system requirements (In my opinion)
Tribes 2 (510~Mb download and somewhat high system requirements in comparison to other games listed in this post, FPS game with pretty huge maps
PS: Site seems to be down at the time of posting, but it's the correct site
FreecivFree Turn-based Tile-based Civilization game.
OpenTTD (Requires original TTD that you can find from Abandonia) It's called Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe, I think that explains enough, Also the thread is here
Stranded II, Bay12games thread here, Survival game
Counter-strike 2D, Top-viewed shooting game in the style of CS

These are from the top of my head, hopefully that is enough.

Worth noting that he recently made the special editions free, previously he needed the money but as he pointed out now that he is well enough off it was kind of embarrassing for him to have "Please donate I need the money." signs.

Darklands, always a good choice if you're into abandonware RPGs.
Cash Invaders, for that classic feel.
GearHeads 1/2 for those into ASCII.
Master of Magic, the abandonware for strategy buffs.
Incursion, Mage Guild, Omega, Doom the Roguelike, and Prospector for more ASCII roguelikes.
Blades of Avernum, you need to purchase a key though.
Warpath 21st Century and Well of Souls might help a bit for a single player experience, but the multiplayer servers are dead AFAIK.
You can also try Transcendence, I don't think it takes much to run.

Edit:
That reminds me, you can also download the original DOOM and Strife games from somewhere as well.

Elona is... well, it's difficult to explain, but it's a semi-roguelike with nonlinear gameplay.

Transcendence ran fine on my old 500Mhz CPU most of the time, but those systems with nebulae (I know they're not nebulae, but I can't think of a better name) lagged like crazy. Seriously, the game turned into a slide show there.

Anyway, it's a nice game, so give it a go. Also seconding Dungeon Crawl.

IVAN - a roguelike with limb damage! Also, it lives up to its name.
Soldat - 2D multiplayer platformer-shooter.
Enemy Territory - an official expansion pack to Return to Castle Wolfenstein turned standalone freeware during development. Basically the multiplayer portion of RtCW.
