Just out of interest, would it be possible to clean up the messages you get each day?  Perhaps to display them all on one page, or to remove unnecessary ones (I don't care how much money each of my individual prostitutes makes ).

Maybe not? Maybe I just imagined that I looked at them and they were similar in format to the .cpc files. It was a long time ago. Even if I didn't look at them, they're probably virtually identical if not completely so; even the .cpc files have multiple "frames", they just use them to represent separate images.

Along with my suspicion that this is a custom file format, my guess is that .cpc stands for "curses/console pic" and .cmv stands for "curses/console movie".

Doing this would allow me to fix a major problem with newspapers on Wine and Linux.

Yes, I'm familiar with how newspapers appear on Linux. It is because the console in Linux doesn't use the character set the newspapers are designed with; you might be able to make them look more readable, but without going to unicode, I don't think you can make them look the way they're supposed to.

There should be a way to set your termcaps to show high-bit IBM ASCII. I don't know how, but it should be doable.

EDIT: Set your encoding to cp437 and you should be fine, assuming your console supports it.

Re: the high-bit stuff discussed above--I haven't looked at the LCS code, but unless it's mighty funky you should be able to use Unicode equivalents that work on Unix and Windows without having to mess with the Unix termcaps.

I've never done this myself, but I think you can recruit them when the animal rights issue is L+.
