Releasing nuclear waste into the water supply is going too far...

seriously...

Also failing the roll for using the nuclear power controls should cause a explosion instantly ending the game(IMO).

Waste-release might be reasonable as something that happens by accident, if your Science isn't good enough.  It would be a bad thing, making the LCS unpopular.

Perhaps we should have a spectrum of various things that can happen if the Squad is ordered to mess with the nuclear control panel, ranging from good to bad to ugly.  Science skill allows you to force the outcome to be the best: clean shutdown of the plant.  Otherwise you play a roulette that can also land on waste dump, or Earth Shattering Kaboom.

To me it would seem to cause alienation no matter how you look at it(liberals drink water too you know).

But Im right behind you on the spectrum thing.

I could see this as a critical failure of the worst sort, yes. I can't see the LCS causing wide-scale indiscriminate civilian causalities on purpose for any reason.

Otherwise you play a roulette that can also land on waste dump, or Earth Shattering Kaboom.

It is my (Wikipedia-backed) understanding that an Earth-shattering kaboom is right out due to the nature of the reactor fuel. Large-scale radiation leaks? Fallout, even? Sure. But not a nuclear explosion.

IIRC, JSF can conveniently comment knowledgeably on this subject...

Well, there could be explosions, but not like a nuclear bomb; a steam explosion from the heat, for example, is possible. The big threat would indeed be radiation though. Maybe if you really blow it (nobody in the squad has ANY science, for example...) you could permanently close the site and lose your entire squad.

You could consider it a victory. Sort of.

Well, if the nuclear power plant is shutdown, then the law would already be L+ meaning nuclear power is outlawed, so why not make it a "coal powerplant" and the big button shuts down the plant, blacks out the state, all in protest of how much it pollutes?

It would effect the pollution issue and (maybe the nuclear issue just to keep opinion in check?) it would go to show you how unreasonable and extremist the LCS is.

I think that a large nuclear explosion would be amusing and as such should be considered as an addition to the game.

Why not just turn your squad into radioactive mutants with super powers?

I know that in Real Life, but I think it would be acceptable artistic license for LCS.

After all, real life geneticists couldn't create Flaming Rabbits if they tried.

And Chernobyl did lead to evacuation of more than a city.  If the same thing happened in LCS-ville, it would probably be considered a game over.  All the actors, liberal and conservative, would be forced to resettle in a different city.

It's unlikely a meltdown would be another Chernobyl, though, at least if we're talking realism. Three Mile Island had a meltdown, but there was no containment breach, no radiation leakage, and in fact most of the facility was still being used, last I knew.

For simplicity's sake, I'd prefer implementing a meltdown that just permanently irradiated the site and killed your squad, leaving the rest of the game relatively unaffected. Perhaps you could still visit the site, but you'd take passive damage each turn and the only thing you could find would be hostile genetic monsters, the occasional friendly mutant, and some weird chemicals (which are a loot type already in the game). Locating the control room again would let you see the charred and looted bodies of your comrade martyrs.

Sounds epic, and if its easy to implement then I guess thats killing two birds with one stone.
