cancel job: getting water
« on: September 03, 2009, 06:16:55 am »

Hi all,

i guess this is a simple question, but searching for it led me nowhere...

I have not had this problem before when playing DF, but now all my dwarfs are constantly canceling whatever jobs i gave them and going to the river to "get water"... i am brewing drinks at the same time, but for some reason i can not get them to stop "getting water"

this is really bad as they abandon other jobs and just keep marching to the river

any ideas why? how to stop that?

Have you got any injured dwarves? If so, they are getting water to give to the injured ones.

Put a well in the center of your fortress, and at least they won't be marching as far (or be as vulnerable).

There are not enough barrels available to drink from, so your dwarves are getting water instead. Keep brewing.

In the meantime, build wells, and designate water zones around them, if the water is one level below the well, and marvel how quickly your dwarves drink.

Actually, wells are pretty darn effecient, one bucket holds ten drinks, and the drink water task is an instant, not the five hour marathon chugging out of a barrel booze can be, so it could make up for slow, thirsty dwarves.

They do that. They bunk off for a drink every so often. Generally, you need to keep a LOT of booze around, since a dwarf claims an entire barrel while drinking. If someone tries to drink and finds all the barrels claimed, they think there's no booze and go off to drink water instead.

Try setting your announcements to 'announce some job cancel'. That'll stop the routine job cancels, and cut it down to OMG GROUNDHOG!, I CAN'T WALK!, and I'M OUT OF MATERIALS!, and a few others.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

That true? I expected wells to work the same way as barrels. Especially since i've seen the bucket travelling up and down. So multiple dwarves can drink from a single well?

Yes, they can. I think it's about three or four drinking tasks get queued from one well.

But yes, wells are exceedingly efficient. I have four or so wells providing water for two hundred goblins. The thing is, though, in order for that amount to work, the wells must be directly on top of water, and a drinking zone must be designated around it. What happens then is that if all the wells are tasked for drinking, dwarves will head to the drinking zone to get a drink, where they will begin the slow process of taking a drink directly from water. Once the well is free, they move from drinking water and instead take an instantaneous sip and leave.

So yes, much more efficient.
