zchris13:  No kidding, and just wait until you see more.

Aqizzar:  And sometimes they go all the way out to a dungeon in the middle of nowhere, as you'll see in a moment.  ;D

Uber dwarf2.0:  Good idea, sounds like something to do in the next playing session.  Unfortunately you were just a bit late for this one.  We could use the money, and Oon-la needs to put her thieving skills into practice...

Alright, we have a much better idea of where the person who killed Lysandus came from, at least.  We could use a bit more information, though; there's still the lead involving Medora, but we can't quite do that one yet (need another level).

I noticed you're camping out in fast travel.

Since Oon-la is going to PO Wayrest sooner or later, perhaps it would be a good idea to join the Wayrest Knights of the Rose in order to get free inn stays and get more information about the Wayrest Court?

That's my Wormy.  He almost sounds bored.

"So there was this guy, Zurin Arctus.  He helped Tiber Septim conquer the world, but then Septim betrayed him and I guess killed him.  Bugger if I know why.  But Arctus got so pissed off about being killed that he couldn't die.  Something about the Numidan or Numa Numa or something, I wasn't really paying attention.  Then he started telling everyone he was 'The Underking', whatever that means, and wants to...  Uh, well he never did get around to explaining what his plan was, he's just into doing evil and stuff.

Point is, he's horning on my business.  The little bitch and his thugs have been a pain in my rotten ass for several times longer than you've been alive, and if he gets his body back he'll be even more annoying.  Don't ask how, it's undead stuff, you wouldn't get it.  So yeah, make sure he doesn't get that Numidanian thing, whatever it is.

Well, you know where the door is.  Sorry about the zombies, feel free to mow them down all you like.  It's easier to raise them again than convince them not to attack people."

Damn, now I feel bad for killing him in Oblivion.  :-\

I'll have to remember to download this game. Looks incredibly fun. Could someone answer just how this game would be enjoyed by someone who enjoys RP'ing in a game, loved Oblivion, and found Morrowind enjoyable, but environmentally off-putting?

Just popping in to say that I didn't expect to start following this LP when curiousity first made me click the thread, but it's a really enjoyable read with a cup of coffee. My own attempts at Daggerfall haven't been quite as succesful and I don't think I'd have the patience to play it again either, mostly due to its cursed ability to easily break.

Thanks.

Well, staying at inns saves two or three days at most per trip, and that's the longer ones.  Yes, it adds up, but it's not as if there's a time limit, as I said, and joining a guild just for that and then not doing anything with it strikes me as a little cheap.  Plus, the rewards for actually working one's way up in the guild aren't that good for Oon-la, except for maybe the house (and that'd be in Wayrest, which isn't exactly a convenient spot).

Well, you know where the door is.  Sorry about the zombies, feel free to mow them down all you like.  It's easier to raise them again than convince them not to attack people."

That's about it.  And I'd probably feel the same way in his situation.

Oblivion did terrible things to poor Wormy.

The setting is similar to Oblivion's, insofar as that it's a western European medieval type of setting.  As for RPing things... well, the flexibility is considerable, from character creation onward; plus, you can go just about everywhere, do all sorts of things, buy a house, pick out clothing, etc., etc.  For example, I probably could have developed Oon-la's studious, bookwormish personality (which makes her thieving skills odd, but hey) more, but, hey, I'm lazy.  I think you'd enjoy it.  If nothing else, you should give it a try - it's free, after all.

Quite welcome.  And I'm just stubborn; believe me, this game has crashed and messed up more times than I can count.

Now, time for me to get to playing...

|:Halt!:|
Or, how to be a thief in Daggerfall

Uber dwarf2.0 wanted Oon-la to go out thieving.  That's no easy proposition, as I'm about to show you.

There are 3 main ways (with one variant) of getting objects illegaly in Daggerfall:

1.  Shoplifting

2.  Breaking and entering
2(a).  Loitering around a store until it closes (which uses a similar mechanic), but this is borderline cheating

3.  Bank fraud

So, in that order, let's take a look at them.

It's so epically lame, thieving.  Do something interesting. Like stab zombies.

Wait, what was that "generated background" thing in character creation? The GAME gave you that? I've never seen such a thing.

Yes, it did.  After creating a character and the game dumps you into Privateer's Hold, go to the character info screen by whichever means you prefer, then click on "History".  After a little popup with your class' advantages and disadvantages, it goes to a book-style thing with that background.  It's generated through your answers to the background questions.

And is usually pretty awesome. Unlike most RPG backgrounds, they're actually worth a read.

Thought I'd pop in to say that I'm enjoying the LP so far. Got me to restart my copy for a while.  ;D

I adored this game.  I played it 16 hours a day for 6 months.  I was the users' gadfly to the tech support, and the game's defender to the users.  Between USENET and Daggerfall, I had no life except sleeping and eating.

I only wish they had made it possible to modify Daggerfall.  Morrowind gave us the ability to build (in an editor that, true to Bethesda tradition, was so buggy that one sometimes had to save after every single change to avoid losing everything to date in a crash), but the cost was the flying horses, the risque content, and it still had bugs.  For instance, beyond one year past completing the main quest in Morrowind, the final year's worth of quest completions come due again, with the accompanying loss of reputation when you can't complete them a second time.

I never did complete Arena because of the memory list bugs, but I liked it so well that I accidentally bought a second copy when they reissued it in a new box.

*sigh*

I need help...

Making a character, I just followed what you did to start off with. Because I'm sorta overwhelmed with this.
