Hmmm, Shadowscale works.  It conflicts a bit with the background the game generates for us, but we can weasel our way around that.

Alright, the results of our character creation.

Our our answer to the background questions has made scholars like us more.  Yep, bookworm indeed.

And our stats.  We won't get health and the like until we actually get into the game.

It also provides us with a generated background based on the answers to those questions:

You might not ever have been a thief, for you had been raised and trained from an early age to be a cleric.  Until that fateful day when the caravan your master, Sauril Spellthar, and you were travelling in was waylaid by a orc tribe, you were content that your place in life was set.  Suddenly, everything you believed in was proved false.  The treacherous cleric you had put your faith in sacrificed you in order that he might escape the orcs.  Though you managed to survive in your new role as a captive of the orcs, you never again would trust a cleric.

You ahd grown up among the superstitious people in the backwater swamps of Black Marsh, and had believed that orcs were demons or daedra, but you found the tribe to be surprisingly civil.  They needed an Argonian to interpret the books they had found about the ancient orcish capital of Orsinium.  As you stayed with them and learned their language, you developed a respect for their primitive but noble ambitions.  Nevertheless, you knew that you needed the society of other Argonian people, so when the opportunity arose, you escaped.

Times were difficult all over Black Marsh, but you found that the dodging and dagger fighting skills you had developed in the orc camp allowed you to be a fairly successful thief.  One night, while ransacking a nobleman's townhouse, you came across correspondence between him and the former Imperial Battlemage Jagar Tharn.  You sold these to a contact you had in town for more gold than you anticipated they would be worth.  You did not realize their full value until you recieved a visit from Prince Voragiel in your room at the tavern.

He told you that Jagar Tharn had been magically impersonating his father for the past ten years, and only recently had the true Emperor been restored.  Loyal subjects like you were rare and the Emperor wished to thank you personally.  You travelled with Prince Voragiel to the Imperial City and there you were presented to the Emperor.  He was indeed very grateful for your service and gave you an ebony dagger.  He also asked you for a favor.

INTRODUCTION

[The intro movie.  Note that the first couple bits actually are when you start the game and not after character creation.]

Four hundred years after Tiber Septim's reign, the beginning will meet the end, and the bloody circle will close in the Empire of Tamriel.  The unworthy heirs of the Septim dynasty have allowed the parts of the Empire to weaken and crack.  Uriel Septim VII cannot repair what his ancestors ignored.

The provinces fight amongst themselves like neglected children, drunk with rebellion - and one indominable power hides itself, but not forever.

And so, the Emperor calls us to his chamber at an ungodly hour.

Anyway.  It should be easy enough to just sail over to Daggerfall City and start asking arou-

How frequent are these updates going to be? Will the next update encompass all of Privateer's hold? Or perhaps until a major fork is encountered (like the huge room with the elevator)? How much control are you going to give to the audience?

Frequency is every few days... I don't always get a couple hours to play through a dungeon or the like.  I'll probably do each dungeon all the way through in an update... and I'll certainly exercise veto power if there's something I particularly want to do (or something I particularly don't want to do, though that won't come up very often), or if I feel the main plot has been neglected for too long (though being Daggerfall, "too long" is a decent amount of time).  In other words, feel free to make recommendations and expect them to be followed, but don't be surprised if it gets pushed back a bit in favour of something else.

Privateers Hold (privateers not included)

I usually won't go into this much detail with a dungeon, at least not picture-wise (we're up past 100 and that's just the first dungeon!  Well, okay, most of that was character creation shots I didn't use), unless there's something particularly interesting; this one is mostly to introduce you to a few enemies and show what dungeons look like in this game.

Now, it's decision time!  I won't always give a direct decision like this, but often I will.  Our choices:

Yeah, Chesterwark is nice.  However...

Why in God's name did you forbid plate armor?  Seriously, how many times do you want to die?

I've always wondered how the ship could crash all the way up there.

I suggest stopping over in Gothway Garden to sell off the loot / buy supplies, then raiding a tomb on the way to Chesterwark.

Oon-La needs to ditch those pants ASAP. They clash with the rest of her outfit.

Seconded.
You might want to get a bunch of healing items, as you are supposed to be "shadowscale". Don't forget, thievery early on is good, as it builds up a foundation for your adventuring. Just don't break the game.

I'm sorry for the minor derailment but can you please tell me how to get the Dos box verson to run?I followed bethsda's guide but all that came up was a message stating that I placed my CD in the wrong drive. If you could please write me a guide or redirict me to a website that has a correct guide that'd be great

Aquizzar:  I'm not entirely sane, no.  It's still possible to make it regardless, though it'll certainly make things a challenge in later levels.  I'm used to dying in this game, though, so at least it won't bother me quite too much.

Free Beer:  No kidding.  Fortunately, I find something quite a bit better in the very first store I set foot into.

Killas[SiN]:  No thievery right off, at least, if nothing else since I don't want to damage my reputation in Daggerfall too much.  The thievery will come, though, of course.

Uber dwarf2.0:  Hmmm... that seems odd.  Make sure all the files are in the right place, the "dfcd" folder might be misplaced or missing.  Not having access to your computer, I couldn't go in to look at what might be wrong (and it probably wouldn't be all that good an idea to give such access to a stranger, after all. :p ).

Taking a bit to upload all the pictures, after that the next part will be ready.

1) The first step is to install DOSBox. Launch its setup program and install with default options.

2) After DOSBox is installed, navigate to its entry in the Start Menu (DOSBox-0.73) and then select
Configuration, and then Edit Configuration. If you have used DOSBox before, it may be best
to run Reset Configuration first before running Edit Configuration.

3) This will open up Notepad with the config file displayed. Look for the section [dosbox]. In this section will be a setting memsize=xx. Change the value of xx to 32 (i.e. memsize=32) and then save and close the file.

4)The next step is to extract Daggerfall from the archive. The archive is a zip file named
DFInstall.zip. Using a zip program such as Winzip or Winrar, open the archive and choose to
Extract. You want to extract the entire contents of the zip file to a directory on your C:\, such as C:\dosgames. So, when you chose Extract, the program will ask for a path, enter C:\dosgames. This will create the folders C:\dosgames\DFCD and C:\dosgames\DAGGER.

5) Once the archive extraction is completed, DOSBox must be launched to start the installation
process. Use the DOSBox icon on your desktop or the entry in the Start Menu to launch it.

6) Once launched, you will be presented with a window containing a command prompt ( Z:\> ).

7) As DOSBox is a virtual environment, the locations to work with must be mounted within the
virtual environment. First, you must mount the location that contains Daggerfall's files to a virtual
C within DOSBox.

8) To do this, type this line in at the command prompt
mount c c:\dosgames -freesize 1000
Press enter to process the command. This will map C:\dosgames to virtual C:\.

9) Next, you must emulate the Daggerfall CD-ROM for the installation and running of the game.

10)To this, type this line in at the command prompt
mount d c:\dosgames\dfcd -t cdrom -label Daggerfall
Press Enter to process the command. This will map the files in C:\dosgames\dfcd  to
virtual D:\, which is acting like a CD-ROM with the volume label of Daggerfall (needed to run the
game).

11) Once the two locations are mounted, at the command prompt type
D:
then push enter and the prompt will change to D:\>.

12) Next, type:
INSTALL
Press Enter and the Daggerfall installation program will launch. At this
point you can move your actual mouse pointer into the DOSBox window and click once. Mouse
control will be handed off to DB and will work within the Daggerfall installer to select items.

13) Now, agree to the terms and then select "Install the Game to Your Hard Drive."
Then select "Change the Install Size" and set it to "Huge."
Next select "Yes, This Install Size is Fine."
The installer will suggest C:\Dagger as the installation directory. Install the game to that location.
Select "Yes, I want to install the game here."
Following this, confirm the choices by selecting "Go ahead and install the game."
The install will begin.

14) After installation, Daggerfall will offer to configure the sound card. At this point it is important
that DOSBox be running in windowed mode and not full screen. If DOSBox is in full screen, hit
ALT + Enter on the keyboard to place it back into windowed mode before choosing to configure the
sound card.

15) Choose Yes to configure the sound card. Another program will appear. There is no mouse
support in this program so the keyboard arrow keys and the Enter key will need to be used.

16) Press Enter while Auto-Detect is highlighted. Next, press Enter while Detect is highlighted.
This will detect an emulated Sound Blaster 16. Navigate over to OK and press Enter.

17) Navigate down to Select MIDI and press Enter. Select Sound Blaster 16 from the list and
press Enter. Press Enter again to select the default Port of 388. Navigate to OK and press
Enter.

18) Navigate down to OK on the menu and press Enter twice. This will save the config and return
you to Daggerfall's installer. Select OK and the installer will exit and drop you off at C:\DAGGER.

19) At the command prompt, type:
DAG213
Press Enter. This will launch the patch to update the game to 1.07.213. Answer YES to both prompts when the patch asks for confirmation.

20) Once the patch is done, the game may be started. At the C:\DAGGER> prompt, type:
DAGGER
Press Enter. Daggerfall should now load.

21) Each time you want to run Daggerfall, you will need to start DOS-Box and enter these
commands:
mount c c:\dosgames -freesize 1000
 mount d c:\dosgames\dfcd -t cdrom -label Daggerfall
 c:\
 cd\dagger
 dagger

Each of the above commands is followed by a press of the Enter key.

That worked for me on Vista. Cleaned up a bit as the instructions were horribly mutilated as I saw them (for example, every '\' in the page was missing).

Like Tomb Raider, only without the mammary glands

Another split decision.  Eventually going to Chesterwark is in everybody's plan, so we'll end up there in this post.  We'll be hitting Gothway Garden and a tomb on the way, though, mostly because desecrating people's final resting places is fun and profitable.

Spoiler: Gothway Garden (click to show/hide)

That's it for Gothway Garden.  Now, back to dungeon crawling!

Spoiler: The Woodwing Graveyard (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Chesterwark (click to show/hide)

Since Chesterwark doesn't have an alchemist, necessary for getting rid of some of the loot we've gotten, it's time to move on.  There also happen to be three more places to raid along the way to Daggerfall City.

That little plot hook, as you can see, isn't all that urgent, so if there's anything else you want to do, so long as it remains in Daggerfall itself (or one of the nearby kingdoms), that's quite fine.

I suggest Oon-la resolves the plot hook, then leaves the province of Daggerfall. That way, we won't have to worry about things like "ethics" and "morals." What's the smallest province in the game, and is it plot-relevant?
