My stable source of income was a group of 6 hippies selling weed in a different safehouse to the one I was in.  I then got them all 50 juice just by getting them to graffiti a few crackhouses (low risk, really).  That means that they should never rat on you if caught.

Level 30+ ?

I think it has a bit to do with heart, the cracking and ratting out?  Hippies tend to have high heart...

Also it my be because they were only arrested for damage to property (and only once, due to the juice getting graffiti) and for one count of "Distributing a controlled substance" and not for mass murder.

Heheh, oops.
Because the next two posts are a bit short, and I can't really play ahead here, I'm going to post both of them today.

Unfortunate Events
10Mar09,
We never saw it coming, I knew we should have prepared.
When the SWAT showed up on our doorstep, we could do nothing but surrender and hope our sleepers were as good as we thought they were.
We lost all our weapons and equipment.

The following month,
Disaster. Half of us abandoned the cause, including our sleepers, we're screwed.
Ashley Black and Ali Pomper got 4 years.
And then it was my turn, they rattled of an insane list of so-called wrong doings, and 6 of my former comrades testified. Against me.
I got THIRTY bleeding years.

Apart from us three, there is no one left.

*Journal switches over to a dramatically worse quality of paper, the ink has become blotchy almost to the point of unreadability, the colour switches every few lines as if pens are a valuable and temporary commodity, several pages are missing.*

Somewhere in May, 2013.
Today I got a letter from my remaining comrades, the future is bleak, the world outside has shunned liberalism, even moderates are virtually non-existent. They are losing faith rapidly, there is nothing left we can do.
Another disturbing problem is the rise of death squads. This means that right now there is exactly one LCS member in the free world. I am the only other member left.

Somewhere in June, 2013
There was an attempt to kill the president last month, they failed. Poor people, in this country they'll be tortured to death for what they tried.
Resolutions this month where 3 liberal changes and one conservative one on torture, which is now as bad as I can imagi-

*JOURNAL ABRUPTLY ENDS*

To the bloody end.
5may39,
Today I step out into the world.
And I am shocked at the hell it has become. This is no longer a world I can do anything for.
To clarify: The answer to the first line of this diary is this: Something went terribly wrong.
End of this diary.

The Liberal Crime squad was founded the first of January 2009, in a moderate country rapidly becoming conservative. Several months later the whole squad was arrested, and only 3 of its members stayed with the cause. 4 years later, 2 of those were released from prison, and both died soon after.
When 36 years later it's founder and last remaining member, Howard Hope, emerged into today's world, he clung to the only thing he was certain of, that something had to be done. He decided to make an example of himself by storming into what was once, long ago, called the courthouse, he managed to take down a lawyer and severely wound a policeman before succumbing to 3 heavily armed policemen.

During it's existence, the liberal crime squad recruited 13 people, killed 5 people, lost 3, and kidnapped 2. They earned $2561 and spent 2150.

Soooo... Retry taking into account the various bits of advice?
Any comments on how to improve the storytelling? General thoughts?

Hmm... diary form, seems ok, personally, I'd like more of the day to day, but, I guess that won't be as fun for you.  So keep at it.

Attempt two:
Founder name: Leonard Pickett Douglas Dent (Yes, HHGttG reference.). His chidlhood was similar to that of Howard Hope, although Dent became determined that liberalism was the way to go far earlier, he spent high school obsessed with violent video games instead of swords, and on his eighteenth birthday he got his hands on a police uniform as opposed to a thousand bucks.
He lives in Dallas New York, and I'm hoping he'll be able to do more than Howard.

Version 4.00.1 specific settings:
Classic mode: No CCS, I can barely handle the police, nevermind active competitors.
EDIT: Switched to version 4.00.1

Chapter 1: The bare essentials.
The time has arrived. This diary will track my attempt of pulling this country kicking and screaming back onto the right path. I am well aware I can't do this on my own, so I'm going to set up an organisation to achieve these goals. Today, the 1st of January, 2009, the Liberal Crime Squad rises!
-Arthur, born Douglas Dent.

1Jan09,
I prepared, made plans. And the first step is the Herb Patrol, recruiting as many hippies as possible and getting them to provide a stable income for the cause, but first I need to make some of that money myself, my funds are spent, and I'm left with a meagre $7.

20Jan09,
After some time spent online working on credit card fraud, I now $222 dollars to spend for the cause. It is time I go to the Asparagus Garden Vegan Co-op. From tonight onward, I will be using charisma to draw in members.

24Jan09,
I now have 5 hippies selling brownies in the streets, this should be enough for now, I'll try to recruit some useful sleepers.

26Jan09,
The Herb patrol is growing accustomed to their new life, and I made the useful discovery today that the courthouse cells have doors leading directly to public spaces, this may be extremely useful later on. We now also have enough funds to move to a safehouse. The old cement factory will do nicely. I am switching over to training my lockpicking skills for now.

2Feb09,
Progress may be slow for now, but we are getting somewhere, I'm spraypainting messages for the cause in various liberal places like crack houses, increasing juice.

3Feb09,
Xavier Lipman got caughtselling brownies today, we'll be breaking him out of the courthouse next month. I managed to get both a lawyer and a judge interested in the cause. We'll see.

8Feb09,
Angel Hoffmann was also caught.
The judge is now a sleeper. He decided he wanted a codename, it ended up being jame334, I have a feeling we'll be hearing a lot from Jame.

10Feb09,
We now have a sleeper lawyer, our funds have also crossed the thousand buck mark, so I'm giving the remaining herb patrol members spraypaint and an order to go to a crack house.

17Feb09,
We now have a second judge and my first indirect recruit turned out to be an armed gang member. He will be doing perfectly legal activism for now, as he's our only member not wanted for something that the conservatives see fit to call a crime.
Jame called me today, he finished his general status update remarking how little attention from the law we had attracted, our safehouse was unknown, and the case against Xavier and Angel would likely end in two 'NOT GUILTY!'s. I'm glad with this news, and he knows it.

24Feb09,
after another reassuring call from Jame, I decided it was time to do something, I put my security uniform to good use and snuck into Meffert Garment Makers, I stole some fine cloth and freed a full 4 sweatshop workers.
Jame however, gave me a warning;
'You made one mistake, though. Archie Youngblood has got his own file somewhere round here, he's wanted all right. Stormed down a fire escape after a failed break-in, wielding a shotgun, screaming bloody murder and keeping his word, it may be a good idea to get him of the streets.'
We-ell, I think I'm going to have a talk with mr. Youngblood...

Personally, I rather like the style for storytelling so far. I'd suggest adding a little more meat to the diary though, just to make it seem more like a diary and less like a list of activities and crimes to be found by police. Hide the specifics about illegal activities in code, and for those who can't get what the meaning behind the diary entry means, add a spoiler tab.

I just downloaded and started playing LCS today, but I rather enjoy it so far. It hasn't become monotonous or boring in my, what, 8 hours straight playing it so far? I've started to get the hang of recruiting better members, though I tend to split things up a bit too much and often end up dead as a result of wandering too far into a building before realizing I need to flee.

If you would like, my archetype of a character would be much like a soldier. Skilled with firearms and combat, and sticking to trench coats during missions and nice suits when performing legal activities. The name I've used the most, so far, has been Aleksander Miller, with a secondary choice of Alex White, usually going to a second in command character. Those two characters often become my assault squad, used for clearing out the crack houses early on. Charismatic and persuasive, they also tend to be used for recruiting and fund raising, hanging out around the Co-Op, Juice Bar, and Crack Houses, speaking to almost anyone who will listen and spending a week talking to almost a hundred people, picking out only the best for recruitment, and accepting donations from everyone else, often earning more than enough money to purchase a set of M16s/AR-15s, enough ammunition to take down the local police station, and nice suits.

Just a head's up, there may not be a post today, but I'll try to keep to a daily schedule, I'm saying this the day before school starts, so it's not by any means a promise.

As for the code thing, yeah, that's a good idea. Although I visualise this is already being in code, as well as only existing digitally behind several layers of encryption. I'm also having a bit of a dillema on whether to keep it as a diary, or start including more conversations. But actually getting some characters into it beyond Arthur has been a main goal ever since my run with Howard Hope ended.

Citizens rejoice! Update!

Chapter 2: Slow Progress

25Feb09,
I had my talk with Archie.
It was... interesting, it turns out that he was gathering funds for an attempt to break out several fellow gang members that got arrested for attempting to free the sweatshop workers, ALL of the sweatshop workers, at Meffert Garment Makers. Then someone in the gang ratted all of them out and most of the gang got arrested, Archie was one of the few that got away, and now he's vowed to do something about the conservative menace. No wonder he signed up so readily when he showed up at the talks.
Also interesting is that freeing the oppressed, which I have been doing last night, turns out to draw quite a bit of attention, good thing I've gotten my hands on that security uniform. I managed to get out without alarming anyone, freeing 6 workers, getting some loot and destroying some machinery.
On the other hand, the third Herb Patrol member has been arrested today. I hope our sleepers are as good as they claim to be. It's too soon since last call to talk to Jame about this, but I'm looking forward to hearing what he has to say.

1mar09,
Legislations were bad, 2 conservative law changes. We'll be trying to break some of our members out of the courthouse this month.
-Make that member, Everyone but Angel Hoffmann ratted us out. Bastards.

2mar09,
Success. However, Angel was beaten and wounded when we got him out, and two of his inmates were captured during the getaway, we'll bust them out next month, I suppose.

5mar09,
Jame Called, it was a short call, telling us to switch safehouses right away. We did so. He'll call back later.

8mar09,
After the breakout, infiltrations are becoming harder, it seems I've become notorious. This is bad news. I'm considering handing myself over to the police and beating them at the law system, but that will have to wait until the end of the month.

16mar09,
After a few days of destroying equipment at the sweatshop I'm now called a revolutionary. Yay!
Two sweatshop workers joined the cause, they'll be making clothing, but in far better conditions than the sweatshop, but first they'll be doing some activism to get their juice up. As it's below zero at this point.

18mar09,
Well, so much for that plan, Walter, one of the freed workers, got beaten up badly and will be spending a lot of time in the free clinic. His colleague still wants to go on, however.

21mar09,
A scouting mission into the radio station reveals the broadcasting room to be about 3 steps from the door, this is good news, very good news.

23mar09,
Jun Gleaves, the other liberated worker, has also been beaten up, and will be joining his colleague in the hospital.
29mar09,
I've started doing credit card fraud again lately, we are filling our coffers in preparation of setting up a safehouse in the university district. After that we'll try to convince some sleepers by different means...

7apr09,
We've rented a university district apartment, kidnappings are being planned.

11apr09,
We kidnapped a construction worker, bastard turned out to be a professional thief, we'll see if he'll convert...

15apr09,
The interogation isn't going too well, and Dominic Chandler got arrested. We'll get her out.

25apr09,
Mary lewis joins he colleagues at the police station. The interrogation is hopeless, but me and Archie are learning...

I'm working on getting the other characters in, I'll start with recruiting that programer guy (IWM?) next month, reasons will be revealed in the next chapter. I probably won't be able to keep my daily chedule, but I'll try to work ahead in weekends.

Chapter 3: Events beyond my control
27Apr09,
Archie made some unexpected progress on our hostage, Taylor Diaz (Codename Aaron), who now has two heart and 1 wisdom, I hope this will improve further. Of course, she'll have to be a full-time member, as she's been reported kidnapped.

1may09,
The prosecutions: …, one of the prisoners we almost freed, got a life sentence, we're shocked he got that just for breaking out. Roger Stelling was judged Not Guilty, however.

3may09,
Walter Hutchison is back from hospital and back on getting juice. Aaron regrettably escaped. I've put Jame and his colleagues on using their police contacts to emphasise Aaron's past crimes over his kidnapping, hopefully he'll be serving a prison sentence.

5may09,
FUCK. The police are just outside the door, there's too many and we're with too few, I'm sending these files to a safer location and destroying this harddrive, then I'm surrendering. We'll have to beat them in the courts.
The LCS may be slowed by this, but we will not give up!

25may09,
My stay here is characterized more by boredom than by anxiety. Today I got a newspaper clipping about a reported telekinesis drug. It that gets of the ground we'll try to get our hands on it.

The following entries are copies from the joint journal of the remaining LCS.
 1jun09,
Sleeper Barry Villa turned up at the shelter today, saying he was tired of indirect methods. This is and as our lawyer dissappeared a while ago this leaves Jame and Bernard as our only courthouse sleepers. But none of us can fix this, we'll have to wait for Arthur and the others come back from the courthouse.

 SUPREME COURT LEGISLATIONS:
5-4: Stop Corporate Criminals (L)
5-4: Punish Polluters (L)
5-4: Protect Our Borders [C]
6-3: Fight Reverse Discrimination [C]
5-4: Support the Sanctity of Marriage [C]
5-4: Protect Free Speech (L)

End result: 3 Conservative, 3 Liberal.

Dominic Chandler's trial was held by Jame, who had trouble keeping a straight face,  luckily nobody noticed. During the court itself every single side made terrible mistakes, Jame was constantly fighting back smiles, the prosecution was all-round terrible, and the defense finished his otherwise decent attempt with an accidental 'MY CLIENT IS GUILTY' The final result: 9 months, for selling fucking brownies.

15jun09,
Progress is slow, but we are now focussing on making money and getting disguises ready for later infiltrations. The freed sweatshop workers are a great help in this.

30jun09,
It's almost time for the trials, we're hoping for a good outcome...

-------------
Yay! Cliffhanger! XD
