Go for 10 by 10 world map tiles. Create a deathstar that actually takes up most of the planet, and use loads of fortresses to do it. That's a real mega project and it would be to proper scale.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Ignore those who suggest ridiculous sizes.  A sphere of 24 diameter is gonna look pretty doggone cool in 3D.

Making such a beast out of steel would require either some modding, or a very lucky site.  I personally urge you to consider modding.  Just because you make it so that magnetite is the only possible cluster in any rock doesn't make the brute reality of a 24x24x24 STEEL BALL any less impressive.

If you go with obsidian, look up "obsidian casting".  The idea is to get magma to flow into a cast, solidify it with water, rinse, lather, repeat.  Requirements:  infinite magma, infinite water.  I could certainly see a truly dedicated player offering the world a 48x48x48 obsidian ball on the right site and using a halfway decent CPU.  Be warned:  Magma flows slowly without lots of pumps to encourage haste...

Yes, that's a whooping 1.4 trillion times the current US Debt. Or a sightly more meaningful number: 124 trillion years of war in Iraq.

Or 12 trillion years with Obama as president.  :D

Meh - a magnetite block has around 750 iron, so 2 of those would do it.  Not hard to find that plus magma plus flux, just takes a little looking. [/quote]

1500 magnetite is not doable.
a 24x24 cube (with inside hollow) would takes 576(top layer, 24x24)+2024(22levels of 24+24+22+22 perimeter)+576(lower layer, 24x24) = 3176.
A sphere would take less. perhaps another magnetite block + gobbo iron factory.
+ 7000 flux (still manageable) + 7000 coal (now this is killing)

The magnetite and flux aren't issues as much as the fuel.  Even if you are in a dense forest it will take decades to grow that many trees.

It's sad when I hear 24 diameter sphere and just think, meh, that's not that big.  Then I realize the numbers we're dealing with and that it's going to be made of steel.

With [SLOW_LEARNER], dwarves probably don't sit around and talk anymore. They just stand in the same corner altogether, staring at each other, sticking their bearded lips out trying to make sounds. And giggling when someone actually says a whole word.

576(top layer, 24x24)+2024(22levels of 24+24+22+22 perimeter)+576(lower layer, 24x24) = 3176.

Not sure how the top "layer" of a 24 diameter sphere is much bigger than about diameter 6, then growing from there out to 24 for 6 levels (exactly equal to whatever top diam is!), and shrinking again.

My estimation says something just over 1000 - 1100-1200 or so - that's rough, but I'm confident it's close.

The carbon source - again, if you have sedimentary, you should(?) have coal - 4 veins of b's coal at about 100 each get smelted into 1200, and that would do it before trees even enter the picture.  Again, rough, but there's room for slop.

It's not like you can snap your fingers and find this map - but I've seen it, and probably more than once.

Far as the superlaser goes, here's one idea.

Leave only a single three wide path on the map that leads to the fortress. On either side, dig a moat to be filled with lava and then have a wall on the other side of the moat from the road. The lava moat is really just optional and only if you're one of those MUST INCLUDE MAGMA types.

Now and this is a major thing as it directly affects the design of the entire fort, have the superlaser array facing towards this road. As close to the edge of the map as possible, build a ramp out of green glass blocks and continue up at an angle rotating ramps and floors upwards up until you get close enough to the Dwarf Star that you can split the "beam" into several other ones that connect to the Dwarf Star itself. After they're attached, remove the piece connects the main beam to the focusing beams.

Next to the bottom ramp, build a support that will hold up the floor directly above it and then remove the ramp.

Now, when you have Master Gunnery Chief Kronk McUrist pull the lever to fire the superlaser at Goblin scum, the collapsing support drops the beam down on the siege, creates a nice dust cloud to simulate a planet shattering blast, and the dust cloud launches the goblins into the lava moat on either side of the road. Well, except for those squished by the collapsing green glass blocks.

And there you have it, a green superlaser blast.

hmm. I would've though that pumping magma up through the Dwarf Star and holding it in 3 or 4 different channels would be best. When goblins come down the main channeled road, you release the magma from all the feeder channels at once being pushed along by pumps. The combined pressure from all the feeder channels pushing at once would make the beam shoot out at very high speed (nice and impressive looking) and vapourise anything in the way.

If you're going to make a proper Death Star you're going to have to use the right materials.  Use steel blocks.  It's doubtful the map even has enough materials for you to make enough steel, so you'll probably have to trade for it.  Now THAT's a challenge.
It is called a goblin invasion, universal income of iron/steel :D
