But seriously, it used to be that before the release of the Phenom 2s, Intel was doing much better than AMD on many pricepoints and socket 775 was fairly ubiquitous. Meaning intel could heavily overprice their CPUs and get away with it. Then the i7/5/3 series came out and socket 775 is rendered obsolete and no longer manufactured - it's price has gone up. I got my E8500 for $170 with tax. The only reason for anyone to buy an E8500 now is to not upgrade their motherboard. AMD is a great price/performance competitor but right now the i7s are beastly overpowering. Few games actually need that kind of power though, mostly pros and games like DF/ArmA2. Most of the time you'll be bottlenecked by graphics.

Ahahah. I'll make sure to come to you for advice when next buying PC components.

You might as well just get a good cooler and OC the e8500. It's a great overclocking chip, and if you've got a good mobo to go with it, you should be able to go pretty far.

My desktop is pretty messy compared to a lot of yours. You can tell, because I have folders that serve as the corners of my digital room where I throw my unsorted crap.

The usual Gentoo Linux + Rxvt, Conky, and this time, Openbox. I've recently moved from GNOME to Openbox, and I love it. I have Openbox set up I don't even need to use a mouse or task bar to get things done. I've got hot keys for everything (I can even pull up a task bar if feel like it.), and some nice scripts that turn my menu into a task and device manager. It's also much faster than GNOME was and it doesn't have as many bugs.

Also, a hand made Openbox theme. They are surprisingly easy to make.
