New laptop desktop, now with Rainmeter! :D

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Rainmeter is really nice. Why I haven't tried it earlier is beyond me.

??? mind if I ask why? Arch is awesome (even if I don't know of a way to make the printscreen key work outside of gnome/kde/xfce :P)

I have no complaints with Arch; it is an excellent distribution. I wish to become more knowledgeable about Linux, and, to that end, I have decided to use the Linux From Scratch guide to build my own system, and there is little reason for me to use anything but the result, as it will be a system entirely customized for myself.

Fair enough :)

I looked at LFS, but the thought of having to wait for literally everything to compile was rather daunting... and it sounds like it could easily become a nightmare to maintain.

good luck!

New monitor, and a new desktop config comes with it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Just after this screenshot, I made my Rainmeter colours a little less in-your-face.

I'm still messing about mainly in Windohs for now while I rearrange things a bit in my hard drives.

Ditch the iTunes, grab Winamp or Foobar.
iTunes is shit.

iTunes is still better than Winamp (I haven't tried the latter). I've found navigation to be much, much better; I'm not sure why most other music players use similar layouts, but they're all obtuse to me.

Maybe they'll get better over time - who knows - but until someone can firmly tell me exactly why iTunes is bad and WinAmp is great and that the latter is easier to use too, I'll stick with this one.

iTunes is a resource hog and has poor codec support.
I, personally, think Foobar is easier to use than Winamp.
But I keep my music meticulously sorted, and lossa albums have multiple artists, so a directory tree view is necessary, which I know iTunes has not and I'm pretty sure Winamp doesn't.
Anyway, the main reason for Foobar is how modular it is.
The layout is ridiculously customisable.

There's also some UI mods, but I like the default one.

iTunes is great when it comes to messing with id3 tags, and it also syncs with various Apple products.

I use foobar when just playing music in the background while doing other things, since it's so resource lite.

When actively listening, I love love love Milkdrop, and find Winamp's media library to be a pretty powerful organizer.  I do wish there were more built-in options to minimalize the program, and there is a woeful lack of pleasant minimalistic skins.

I don't let anything Apple touch my computer anymore.  Ever.  Nothing.  Quicktime and iTunes are both immortal parasites.  I consider them the absolute worst of malware.  You might as well burn any hard drive Apple touches to dust, because no amount of uninstalling, registry cleaning, and hunting for every last shred of their presence will prevent any Apple software from ressurecting itself like some vampiric Wolverine/Gladdos abomination.

Oh gods, Quicktime.
It disables Aero and then decides it doesn't want to play your media files anyway.
Also, I use Audiosurf for active listening.

God, fuck Quicktime. Fuck RealPlayer too.

I'm switching over to WinAMP from iTunes. Mostly because 90% of Rainmeter skins can interact with WinAMP, but not iTunes, unless I install CD Art Display. Which I don't want to.
