Bottom bar is too ingrained.  Default windows set-up for 15 years.  I do have to switch back and forth between home/school/work computers, after all.  There's too much usability shock if I make my home rig too much different from the others.

I like that Sharpenviro allows me to eliminate most of it and shrink down the rest, though.

You can always learn a few keyboard shortcuts
Then it won't matter too much where stuff is on-screen.

Not too sure what the usefulness of this is, when I mainly use the bar for accessing programs or checking stuff on the systray.  I do use keyboard shortcuts for just about anything else.

(assuming we're talking about Windows machines here)
Launching apps: unless you're stuck on XP, WinKey and start typing should get you there 90+% of the time

Switching apps: Alt-Tab is your friend, or WinKey+Tab if you wanna look cool

Systray: fair point, but how often do you actually need to click on something down there? "Safely Remove Hardware" probably the most often if you're moving between computers often (also, if your bar's on the right, the tray doesn't move much )

Clicking an icon on the quickbar for frequently used apps is quicker.

I often use alt+tab, depending on how many windows I have open.

I often have background processes such as utorrent, wallpaper master, etc on the systray.  They're things that I don't need to interact with often but are usually running and the convenient little icon is there when I want them.

I don't know about you, but the 0.5 seconds alt+tabbing compared to the 3 seconds searching my 'bar is worth it.

I've seen a bunch of Linux users here remove all their panels and (presumably) make a larger right click menu to keep everything. Now, I can't seem to do it in Gnome, so what do you guys use?

Tennish in Windows, but I fill my quickbar completely with icons.

I never run anything in fullscreen, so it's usually easier to quickly mouse over to another window half-hidden in the background.
Like right now, the only things I have minimised are a few instances of notepad.
I have Steam chat and friends list to the right, paint.net to the left, and Chromium in the middle.
That and I don't usually keep my hands on the keyboard.
Right hand mouse, left hand doing whatever.

Run Nautilus with --no-desktop and use Openbox (with it's menu) instead of Metacity.

Unity, or Natty in general?
From what I've seen Unity looks pretty cool, it's a nice take on the new GNOME 3 style desktops.
And Natty because, well, it's a new Ubuntu. I tend to avoid beefy distros (running Gentoo on my desktop at the moment), but Ubuntu is great.
