Arch's latest kernel update broke tint2's battery monitor (fortunately just after i dropped it) and ibam (also ibamtray... which i was[/id] using), so i've been hacking up a dzen-based battery monitor...
This is why I always compile vanilla, it isn't as hard as they make it look, and you can get tons of help online too. If you're going with Conky, it shouldn't take too long to set up, took me about an hour to get the basic stuff going, and then another to figure out how to have it display info about my package manager. They have a nice documentation with all the objects right here. battery_bar, battery_percent and battery_time are what you're looking for.

I was looking as LFS before I found Arch... Still plan to try Gentoo sometime... I like the idea of building from source, but the time required to actually do it... bit of a turn off...

Compiling does take a while, some afternoon napping helps pass the time I guess :-P. The package manager is huge plus though, you gotta love Portage.

Yes, I do use Vista (shame, shame), yes, I have a Java decompiler but not a Java compiler, and yes, I edited out my open windows.

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.
Only in Dwarf Fortress...

You should be ashamed for using iTunes and Quicktime, not Vista.

The true puzzle is this: is that cthulhu, or just an octopus pretending?

I think i've got my battery meter done. Perl script reading from /sys piping into dzen.
Conky's battery_time function just returns "unknown" (or was it "unavailable"? i forget)... i think i could patch the source if i really wanted to... i've been reading a fair bit of C/C++ source lately, and it doesn't sound like too difficult a modification

also, steampunk lightsaber  8):

The kernel source? Downloading a fresh .36 and copying over the configuration file is much, much more simple.

Also, awesome wallpaper is awesome.

good heavens no... conky's source
I'm not near brave enough to go diving into the kernel source  :o (yet)

moot point anyway, quite happy with my perl/dzen solution for now
(but thinking about re-writing the perl part as C, for fun, after finals are over)

Huge bump, but I guess I'm finally content enough with my Rainmeter setup to post this.

that's an awesome rainmeter calendar, jay :)

Spoiler: mah latest (click to show/hide)
ascii art done by me

conky's not as flexible as rainmeter... i think it can pull from a wider variety of sources, but there aren't as many built-in ways to display it
maybe when i next get bored i'll look into it's lua interface...

Is there anyone who's good at making Rainmeter skins? I want to combine the functionality of Enigma's iTunes player with the design aesthetic and tab functionality of Stikma, but have NO IDEA where to begin doing so.

Help?

the rainmeter site has a pretty good reference/tutorial iirc.
skins are just fairly simple text files, you should be able to hack the two into something without too much trouble
