My desktop has been completely devoid of anything for some time now. I'm on an Eee, so any windows cover it completely, and there's not that much to install.

I just dump everything on my desktop, but hide the icons.

this is what it looks like:

Ha, that's the first time I've seen a Windows 7 with a proper left-to-right interface. I shall cherish this moment for ever and ever.
What? But... that's what the default looks like.

Me too, kinda. I put everyhting in c:/Users/me/, and went all 'burn it' on my desktop cluttering icons. And I finally tried rainmeter. The icon under the date is the only shortcut, it took me a while to find an icon that didn't look to bad and I had to trick windows into using a hardspace as file name, but I managed to fit it in.

cool, very minimalist :)
what's the single icon open? is it just a folder or...?

Yes, but here in Israel, they sell all OSs in Hebrew, and because Hebrew read right-to-left, they had to flip the whole damn interface. God, I hate those geniuses over at Microsoft.

That doesn't really make much sense if you think about it.  If you read from left to right / top to bottom the best place for the start menu is top left where you would start to read... not bottom. I move my start menu up top because it's less mousing (all the menus are up there, etc.) but I never thought about it in a "reading" manner.  If that's what they were going for with the Start Menu placement, they've apparently failed epically in implementing only half of the convention.

What's this? It's a pie necroing a thread, that's what it is.

Finaly, I managed to set Gentoo up, and it way better than your Ubuntu.

Need some better fonts (X sports very few fonts, and they're all so very tiny) and a working version of Chromium ASAP. Oh, and some plugins to go with it, I can't even remember the last time I installed flash.

Yeah, all fonts are separate packages there, in media-fonts category.

Yeah, I ended up installing the windows fonts and terminus. I also learned I can emerge chromium, which works much better than using the project's silly version control.

Slow epiphany is slow.

As stated in the post, e17 (http://www.enlightenment.org/) compiled from head SVN. But its unfinished (horrible filemanager for example), and has bad habit of requiring recompile for each damn change in x11 or graphics libs.
