I tend to keep my desktop clean... by periodically dumping everything into the "desktop" folder:

accidentally put this in the "things that made you sad today" thread... not sure how that happened, but it's fixed now.

I got a pretty nifty idea for a desktop configuration. More stylish than functional, but whatever.

It's in a concept stage right now (I've yet to have the time to actually work on it or test it out). What it is is basically using Rainmeter and Rainlendar for the interface, and having that overlayed on top of Electric Sheep (or any screensaver activated as a desktop background) as an animating background. Basically I can Hollywoodify the desktop to look more like how many hacker desktops and such look in movies.

When I have it setup, I'll post a screenshot of it. I hope it looks as cool as I think it would. If it works as well as I think it would, I can probably make a BAT script out of it, and maybe use it for startup so it looks that way whenever I start up my machine.

I would definitely like to see this (ideally in motion!) if/when you get it working. IT SOUNDS AWESOME.

I've always liked the idea of animated wallpaper, but between the questionable usefulness, rarely actually seeing it, and laptop battery-life concerns, I've never seriously looked into it.

I do know that the xscreensaver package on Linux contains many interesting animations that can be set as your desktop background. I've got a script (somewhere) to get Matrix-style "digital rain" animating on your desktop. It worked on my Arch setup, I'll try to find it if someone's interested.

I need to figure out a good use for rainmeter... I installed it months ago, but it's just sitting with that default theme until I just exit it. :P

Ah, I see you too have installed rainmeter and haven't the first idea of what you actually intend to do with it. :P
Actually, I just reinstalled it. My last hard drive had a setup made and a few skins I collected and customized. But alas, that was in the past.

This was just a proof of concept run, and it works beutifully. Now I'll need some time to snazzify it up.

EDIT:
Did I catch a ninja-edit?

Curses, you caught me before I looked up and read that you actually were using it, and edited my post. :P

Anyway, on a side note, what sort of animation performance are you getting with that? Choppy FPS/high resource consumption, or is it unnoticeable regarding performance?

Because at one point, I was interested in some 3D animated, transparent objects rendered between the desktop icons and the lowest level windows, and that was quite the hack. Render to DirectX rendertarget, hack some window pointers to grab the pseudo-window the OS renders the icons onto, manually alpha-blend in the image from the DX rendertarget, with an RGB to YUV color conversion in there somewhere.... Slow as heck, but a rather interesting effect.

You can adjust the settings in the screensaver itself, provided your processor and GPU can handle it; but it's actually playing clips pre-rendered (the processing power is devoted to rendering new frames and helping make new sheep; the movie clips the screensaver runs are low-def right now, in time, they'll be able to provide HD renders). Depending on settings, it's not too bad, and runs pretty smooth. My machine's pretty old (had it since 2006), and it's running smoothly, even with Rainmeter on top.
