B:get a readyboost flash drive to throw some extra memory without blowing out cash (cheaper but slow)
Swap memory? You can expand Windows' swap file to as large as you want as long as you have enough disk space. It's in My Computer under properties I think.
flash memory is faster for random reads (1ns) than HD, i threw in a 1gb flash drive to my grandmother's vista 512mb ram computer, performance was so much better but i wouldn't reccomended it for gaming.

Note to self: Clean desktop of unused shortcuts.

I'm also wondering about desktop enhancement programs for XP. I want to make it slightly prettier and more functional but I don't know how much ram it eats up. I like to play Tf2 and I turn off pretty much everything so I can play it with no FPS issues whatsoever, so I don't want yet another thing eating it up. What would you guys recommend?

WindowBlinds (though I've had some bad experiences with that) for the shell. I'm pretty sure you can hack in stuff too.

There's also stuff like RocketDock, which is an app dock a la OS X, and Rainmeter (which I myself use) which enhances the desktop and adds some functionality. There's also Fences and BumpTop.

Emerge Desktop replaces the lot, which seems pretty cool.

Here's my desktop as of today.  I spent a lot of time customizing my skin to make it way better.  I can now customize the colors by changing a few variables in one file.  :D  Took my whole damn weekend though.   :-\  My biggest achievement was figuring out how to get Rainmeter to render a clock-face without using a base image.  My second biggest one was getting it to toggle the visibility of everything with less code.  Now I don't get a headache trying to make sure everything works.

check out styleXP. it's similar to windowblinds, but has little to no performance impact.

I moved my Rainmeters to the side, moved stuff and filled my taskbar with icons, and after uploading I removed some more stuff. Looks pretty nice to me.

No thanks on those absurdly high resolutions, I'm never going to go over 1280x720 if that.

Trying out Rainmeter with the Gnometer theme. It's a bit of a pain to arrange all these, and I gotta leave some folders on the desktop because my mother uses this so things are not looking as snazzy as I would like. I'll tinker with it a bit more.

Setting colors is a bit of an extra pain that I'm forced to do though.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

When your monitor dies, you'll be SOL.
You can't run LCDs in a resolution they weren't made for without graphical artifacts.
