[Dwarf fort 27]

Mine consists of 27 champions, 4 wrestlers and 2 archers,how bout you?

My previous fortress, Towerclouted, had 24 champions trained to legendary at wrestling, armor, shield, war hammer, and crossbow; half of them used steel crossbows, and the other half used adamantine war hammers. Of course, with the cage/weapon traps lining my fortress entrance, they never really did anything other than spar and use up my masterwork goblin bone bolts at the archery ranges.

About 24. 1/4 each of marksdwarves, hammerers, axedwarves, and speardwarves, and with the odd sword user.
The melee dwarves are packed together in three mixed squads, and the marksdwarves in a big squad on their own, a holdover from cleansing the magma pipe.

Eight goblin champions. One each wielding a scimitar, spear, flail, and battle axe. The other four wielding scourges.

The four wielding scourges suck.

Since humans and dwarves and elves have different siege behavior than goblins, the eight I have is usually enough. I'm thinking about recruiting more, but I don't know what to arm them with. And lack of steel is a bit of an issue, but the dwarves bring some that I can melt down.

I have 4 marksdwarves, 1 for each season to stand guard against those kobold thieves.
And a single migrant macedwarf, but he's never on duty, sieges have me raising the drawbridge and hoping the next caravan brings guards to take them out, I can't be bothered to raise a military while working on a megaproject.

Current fort has a population of 65 and 9 champion wrestlers and 1 wrestler. Usually I just stick with a cadre of leather armor wrestlers and crossbowmen until I have steel or better available. My current map has no iron, coal, or flux so I'll be waiting for goblins to drop a siege before I start going for steel. I've been building up fluxstone and coal/lignite from dwarf caravans so I'll be ready when my first iron delivery comes.

I'm currently training my repurposed hunters as marksdwarves, have them stationed at the underground river picking off olmmen and frogmen, occasionally luring them towards my cage traps so I can have fun with them in the arena I'm making.

Usually in an endgame fort I'll have an entire military of champions, I put crippled ones in the guard and I kill the hammerer/all nobles except dungeon master and mayor every time I get one. The champions are about 1/3rd crosbow, 1/3rd hammerdwarves and 1/3rd speardwarves. I occasionally use swordsdwarves over hammerdwarves if I have obsidian and no adamantine but hammerdwarf/marksdwarf is an excellent combo because marksdwarves use the hammer skill for melee with crossbows. Combat is also fun to watch, marksdwarf shoots the poor goblin, crippling it then the hammer comes down flinging them halfway across the map in all sorts of hilarious fashions.

Normally I have 10 soldiers, who quickly get up to champions, fully kitted out in plate armour and weapons. 20 fortress guards, armoured but not armed, act as a secondary defence in case anything gets into the fort.

My rule for military is once you reach a pop of 50 your military should consist of 25 or more, im at 78 rn , well 65 from the recent ambushes and my military is now 34
