Is there any way that takes more time than this? Besides hand-drawing the pixels in Paint.

Technically, it takes longer to paste into Photoshop or Gimp since they take a fair bit longer to load, but IMO it's worth it because they don't screw up the image quality like Paint does.

Try saving to a lossless format like BMP or PNG instead of Paint's quality 4 JPG compression :>

In Windows 7, there's the 'Snipping Tool' that lets you use the mouse drag to make an area selection, which can be immediately saved in whatever format you like. Ubuntu Linux also has this feature, and it makes taking pictures for community games extremely convenient.

Paint defaults to JPG compression, but that's horribly unsuited to simple colours like DF uses. Great for photos, not for this. Use .gif or .png instead.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Hmm... I am under impression that PNG thriumps over JPG in general.

What does JPG have that PNG does not?

Reasonable sizes with images that vary in colour shade greatly, such as photos.
