Heretic and Hexen? Essentially they're both Doom in medieval fantasy, however that fits with what you're looking for.

Also, Fable allowed you to pretty much own everything as a mage, to my knowledge (and according to Yahtzee's claims of the area attack being overpowered).

In Fable's case, it was that you could buy 400 mana potions for next to nothing, and punch the ground to cause everything around you to get burned.

Over.

And over.

And over...

Two words:
Physical Shield

No knockback, no loss of XP multiplier, and mana potions work instantly.

Have you tried Triangle Wizard? It's semi-roguelike, but since it's a roguelike, don't expect to be uber until after several dozen deaths.

Be a mage in Morrowind, and get that mod that lets you make magic items that are actually useful at level 30.

Oh, and try out mine, while you're at it.

Actually I was talking about one that increased the enchantment cap on items to balanced-at-level-gajillion levels.

Just enchant equipment until you reach chameleon 100% and you're practically untouchable.

ANY mage player is already loads stronger than any mage NPC, since Morrowind's ranged spells are ridiculously easy to dodge.

Weakness to element + Enchanted bow of deal X element damage, and even a half decent enchantment will allow you to raep nearly every enemy in the game. With the exceptions of those that are magic immune/reflect magic.

If you see any mods that allow me to enchant ammo in batches, do tell. I want to make exploding arrows.

I suppose the thread title isn't exactly accurate to what i'm looking for.
There ARE plenty of bad-ass wizard games, but i suppose what i'm thinking of is a game where you can use your magic for a vast multitude of purposes, such as cooking, brainwashing, time control, diseases, etc..
Ech, maybe i have no idea what i'm thinking of in the first place D:

Age of Wonders II and Master of Magic. MoM captures the feel better. Dominions 3 is also cool, but it's more about being a god than a wizard.

Oh, and Conquest of Elysium if you want a free one. CoE starts you off as a wimpy wizard, but the mages are the win late game. In fact, starting off weak is what makes it feel so awesome, because you go from dying in one hit to wiping out huge player armies. Demonologists can summon some massively powerful demons. Necromancers can turn themselves into undead liches who can kill just with a glance, but even as necromancers, they can kill troll kings with a spell, or cast massive lightning blasts. Enchanters can turn frigging gold mines into golems. Also, there's the others who could turn the map into winter and stuff. It's my choice for badass wizardry.

You CAN enchant ammo, but you can only do it one by one.
I did manage to make a dart that casts frenzy on everything in a 500 foot radius.

Well, Morrowind and Daggerfall do possess many "utility" spells, probably the most of any RPG. There's levitation, locking/unlocking spells, disease healing, skill buffs, etc..

I think any D&D based RPG (like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights or Temple of Elemental Evil) has wizards able to do similar things, like enlarging people, curing/afflicting disease, etc., but these come at the cost of deciding not to pick up an offensive spell instead upon leveling up (as that's how wizards gain spells). There's also other magic-related classes, but I'm not sure how they work or if they have similar capabilities.

Among roguelikes, I remember at least in ADOM that burning spells would result in enemies leaving behind cooked corpses which you could eat. And just about any roguelike will have you carrying around an assortment of wands and potions, allowing you to create walls/doors, teleport, polymorph, etc..

Also, I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I recall magic working pretty physics-accurately in Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. That is, for example, you could freeze the ground, provoke an enemy into running over it and then watch them slip and fall (preferably off a cliff). There were also jugs of oil lying around everywhere, obviously meant for use with the fireball spell.

I also just remembered Slaves to Armok I. What other game gave you spells allowing you to teleport someone's brain out or turn their eyes to stone? Not really much use outside of combat, but there wasn't actually that much outside of combat upon its last release.

And no scarring. That was overpowered... I purposely tried playing as an Evil character without said shield, it wasn't nice.

For wizard games:

Magic & Mayhem (I only know the first one from circa 2000, not the sequels). Mostly summoning tho, also, you have the awesome power to age ridiculously fast.

Archon 2: Adept :)

AFAIK, Wizards in D&D (pre-4E) don't pick spells when leveling up, they only gain slots. They have to buy their spells. Sorcerers do have to choose a spell, they get more casts I think, but are limited to the picks, so yes they should never go for utility spells unless there isn't something better in the offensive/buff category.
