Oooh, and here is EA's dossier on Kane, which refers to Kane's role as an adviser to Stalin. So, Kane's role as adviser is considered canon, meaning Phantom's theory is correct.

Also, one problem: C&C1's manual stated that NOD came from Africa.

um... that's not what the wiki says.
there's a lot of text, but basically:
a)NOD is very old. founded around 1800 BC. maybe. but definitely around by 1950s for the Great Second Wold War.
b)NOD has no real center of operations, but major HQs are in Sarajevo, Bosnia as well as Kuantan, Malaysia, the Ar-Rub' al-Khali desert, Saudi Arabia, Tokyo, Japan and Caen, France. (of these only Ar-Rub' al-Khali is even close to Africa)

a large part of the NOD campaign in '95 is taking over Africa, so chances are they're not from there.
As for NOD being out of USSR, it's quite possible that Kane didn't have that much backing among the soviet leadership and actually lost the struggle for power that ensued after the Leader of All People and Times passed away. This also explains why Russia (quite passive in our timeline's '95) eagerly joins the alliance against NOD.

Face it: trying to make Red Alert and the Tiberium series fit in a single storyline produces a dumb storyline. If you throw in the latter tiberiums and red alerts it becomes even dumber. Even trying to do it results in horrible retcons and plotholes.

2) Kane advises Stalin during WWII.
4) UN approves the formation of Black Echo, the precusor of GDI.
5) Soviet Union loses WWII, Kane flees.
6) Kane reappears in public when Tiberium hits, cue C&C1.
7) Operation "Tiberian Incursion" occurs. Red Alert 2 and its alternate history begins.

How is that a dumb storyline?

Ok, I'll bite. What did the time travel do? They did not eliminate Tesla (or Tesla's technologies anyway), they did not develop an anti meteorite defense. Was the addition of a megalomaniacal  telepath somehow going to stop tiberium from spreading? (or is that an "unfortunate side effect"? but of what?!)

Otherwise, they were just outdated by the time the tiberium stuff happened.

They were not outdated: tried and true, the Mammoth Tank (developed by the soviets in the 1950s and given some minor makeover, one assumes, seeing as how it's 40 years old) was still in use by GDI in the 1990s. It's quite possible that Apocalypse tanks were too expensive, violated some UN policy (like units of awesome per meter squared), or might in fact not be on the picture (Apocs look alot like Mammoths, and these could merely be war-painted Mammoths in parade of military units, annual in our USSR, and possibly still held in Tiberium Universe Russia)
