I think it's a good thing, but that might be because my 10x10 embarks tend to just have a lot of everything anyway,

Dude, what do you play DF on, a supercomputer?

A decent 3+ GHZ core can take a 10x10 embark in it's stride. If you're clever and have a Dual or more you can assign DF to an unused core and get maximum bang for your buck.

This. Especially if you're using DF 40d1x.

How do you assign something to an empty core?

My observations fall directly in line with this.

Like when you get gabbro layers, you expect that you might get diamonds, because of the kimberlite, but that is very rarely the case.

More anecdotal stuff:

I recall reading somewhere that on generation the game picks 36 stone/gem types and then populates the rest of the world with them.  Microcline and certain gems that appear in all layers are heavily over-represented because they always have a changed to be picked, leaving things like rock crystal out in the cold.

For this reason, I'm thinking of doing some condensing for my next fortress- maybe removing a few unremarkable rocks, condensing gems down to 1 type of opal and 1 type of tourmaline, etc.

I suspect that might not be true. At least, not across the whole world. It seems like a likely explanation when you shrink the window to region tiles.

In any case, this needs to be tested.

Uh, if i recall you can either do it with certain programs, or in the priority thingy somewhere. I use a program called Core Maximiser my little bro found awhile back.

--EDIT--

Ah yeah, go into Task Manager, right click on the program and click 'set affinity'.

The problem with using task manager is that to assure an empty core you have to change the info for every running process. Someone in another thread mentioned using a program that allowed them to click on a process and hit "isolate" to change all affinities at the same time, but I don't think they gave the name of the util.

I've got one called Core Maximiser that does that.
