I'm in favor of axolotls because their name sounds like something straight from the Aztec. Like Quetzalcoatl.

How can I find it in myself to go against a creature which is vaguely related to a culture who had particularly "interesting" ideas about open heart surgery?

Axolotl is a Nahuatl word, which the Aztec Spoke.

Both are aquatic amphibians, both never naturally metamorphose and remain larva for their entire lives. Both are pale and have frilly red gills.

There was an experiment done where putting certain chemicals in the axolotl's water would force it to metamorphose, but then it loses the will to live and dies young.

Not quite true. I am unsure about olms, but axolotls can be made to "transform" by (gradual?) lowering amounts of water in their habitat, though this won't always happen. Adapting to a decrease in water levels is as natural as you can get, really. Though as you mentioned, they aren't as active and they don't live as long.

Axolotls were cute enough to inspire a pokemon.

I feel like I should know which one that would be. But I can't think of it...

Axolotls are "better" in my opinion. Olms are really cool too, though. I'd love to see one in its natural habitat in person.

But ein, why is this thread in the DF General Discussion, as it has quite little to do with DF (the only thing being that "olm-kind" are in DF)? I suggest a move to the 'Finally...' General Discussion.
I think it's Barboach, if not :|.
I vote Axolotls all the way for unpronounceable name

Dude, axolotl is easy to pronounce.
Axe oh lottle (rhymes with throttle).
Also, barboach is catfish, wooper is axolotl.
The Japanese name for axolotls is wooper looper.

We don't know what mudkip is.
Mudkips have axolotl-like features, but they're also very different.

Mudkip is based on the mudskipper.

Axolotls definitely win for me. They're all tiny and retain their Juvinile Cuteness, and their huge bloom of gills.

Even so, perhaps I would prefer neither in favor of just calling them "Salamanders". There seems to be no standard for simplifying the DF Animal Kingdom. On one hand, we have specifics, like "Rhesus Macaques", "Milkfish", and "Dromedary Camels", while there are still have plain "Dogs", "Bats", and "Lizards".

Well, dogs do come in many breeds and DF can't show those variations yet.

Next version should.
If the caste system applies to the creature and not the entity, we can group all of the various monkeys into a single group and have dog breeds and other nonsense like that.

The caste system seems more complex than just that. Although there is the potential for sexual dimorphism since we can make female dwarves not have beards.

We'll just have to wait and see.

Edit: um, did I kill this thread? err.... GO OLMS GO!

No, you didn't kill the thread.
That requires it to become inactive for at least 24 hours.
