This thread makes me happy. I has two axolotls, a golden one named Apollo,
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And a black one named Axel,
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'd like to say they are friends but all they do is sit in opposite ends of the tank.
I feed them strips of liver (in the shape of a worm), live worms, baby guppies that are overpopulating our other fish tank, some times tadpoles and chunks of special axolotl food. The are quite vicious with the live food, swallowing it whole without even killing it first.

Guh? I didn't know you could keep 'em as pets!

...

Well, if you can have axolotls, then I want an olm!

It seems to be illegal D:

Really? I can't find anything about keeping axolotls as pets being illegal, in fact i've found several sites that tell you all you need to know about keeping them as pets.

Yeah, I haven't heard anything about that, either. In fact, they were actually a fad pet in Japan for a while, apparently.

I voted for axolotl, because Aztec names are awesome, and olms just creep me out. But with how endangered they are, the olm may win out in the end. :(

If I understand it right, it's keeping Olms that is illegal

The pet axolotl fad boomed so much that they had an extreme surplus and starting selling them as food.

orite. Yeah, Olms are illegal. Axolotls are most certainly not (in fact they're the only non-native amphibion that you can keep as a pet in Australia) due to the fact that Axolotls are bred by the bucketload in captivity for scientific study (they're fascinating creatures).

yeah I think olms are like, vulnerable to becoming endangered, so you that might be why you cant have pet olms (outside of DF, anyway)

That's the horror of rule 34.

It applies to everything.

In the end, when I imagine axolotl-men and olm-men, the olm-men are way scarier, quite possible wearing black robes.  The axolotl just look too cute to be menacing, and when it comes down to me watching my dwarves getting eaten, I want to imagine menacing things.

From a dorf's perspective, Axolotls do get the advantage of having "Ax" in their name.
