You forgot the Gravitational turrets (slows all units speed to 2 at Mk2, which you can turn off if you want to fly YOUR ships through) and the Radar Jammer (Mk2) keeping the AI's ships from even FIRING AT the tractor beam turrets.

Also, with such a setup, you don't need the FF
I don't need grav turrets :P The AI simply can't move beyond the forcefields and are stuck in place from the tractor beams. They're stuck in the center and die after taking a few potshots at the forcefields. It'd be a different story if they used Raid Starships the way humans do.

EDIT: Sup Giant laser beam cannons. You are my friends :D

My point was, FFs are more valuable other places than over your front line defenses.

Unless they're warping into a system I'll never have the AI beyond my front line defenses if I'm lucky, I won't need FF back there. ;)

Does a cloaked cap. ship only fleet work against AI 10?  as a spec. ops force for taking out all the data centers.

I know it does against AI 6.  Won by attrition with only 8 planets after destroying all the Data centers and having AI progress at the floor.

No.  Two reasons:

1) Cloaked ships uncloak as soon as they start firing, so you have to low power mode them first (or they'll fly through a wormhole and shoot at the turrets).

2) The AI knows what tachyon drones are and uses them liberally.  Fighting AI 7+ you can't even scout more than two or three systems in any direction because they get uncloaked and blasted.*

*An AI 8 game I'm playing with one friend where we have 4 home planets each, a group of forty scouts can't make it beyond the second system.  I had to put them into a transport, with three more transport escorts (the extra transports take damage keeping the important one alive) and then when they blew up, sent the scouts on their own and still only made it one system farther.

Or a split second before you send in scouts, send in a few diversonary fighters/lvl 2 science vessels.

The AI will drop everything to attack a science vessel. Bonus points if you send in a type of warship diversion that will goad the AI into building weak units against yours (like repeatedly losing 50 lvl 1 fighters which are nothing) so the AI spams frigates, and then you swarm in later with bombers that destroy frigates. :D

Sneaking in scouts is fun.

I love this game !

I played the tutorial yesterday and ... I lost ...  :'(

First game ever where I get a Game Over at the tutorial : I attacked a warp gate in a sector full of MK IV ships, and a few minutes after, a swarm of MK IV ships attacked my home base (the best ship I had were MK II bombers and fighters, a Dreadnought and Light Starships), I was crushed in a few minutes.

Yup, the tutorial is brutal if you don't know what you're doing.
(I should note that in my current game I am taking on Mk4 worlds with Mk1 units, as Parasites + Regenerator Golem = (almost*) Free Shit)

*Regenerator golems are not cheap.  It costs the golem 1 hp per 1 hp of resurrected unit health and has a repair cost of ~56/s compared to 1.4/s for all other units.  But it means I can prolong fights beyond my normal capacity.

Don't forget the colossal AI Progress costs of even having any Golem.

Don't forget the colossal AI Progress costs of even having any Golem.

That's gone.  It no longer costs AIP to repair a golem.

Quote from: Prerelease 3.165
Golems have been majorly rebalanced, to create a new strategic landscape for them -- they have long been the most underused units in the game.

    * There is no longer and AI Progress cost associated with golems in any way, from repairing them or otherwise.
    * Golems now have significantly higher repair costs after being initially repaired to be operational.
    * Golems now require supply, which means that they are useless for long-range raiding.
o This encourages a (sort of) new school of strategic thought relating to adjacency to keep the golems relevant on offense. Certainly no other units emphasize this to the same degree, anyway.
      (removed 3.168)
    * Golems now require proximity to AI warp gates in order to function -- they have to be within one hop of an AI warp gate in order to attack, etc.
o This prevents players from using golems to play "goalie" on their home plants, which could have created impossible-to-lose scenarios for players.
o Thematically speaking, this is related to the golems being reliant on exo-galaxy signals echoing from the ancient Zenith civilization. These signals are normally not able to be picked up at all, but AI warp gates cause them to be amplified to the point where they are faintly available.
    * The cumulative effect of these changes is that golems are no longer such a strategic risk, and they provide some new excitement on the front lines, but are not useful at deep defense or on long-range raiding.
(Released 2010-06-06)

That weekend was a very active weekend for rebalances.  For a short period Sniper Turrets had the reclaim ability.

Oh. The wiki is out of date I guess.

The wiki is very out of date.  Only the staff can edit it (I actually made two posts on the forums, one for a minor typo, and another pointing out (again) a lopped off sentence in the CON expansion page) and they're generally pretty busy doing other stuff.

Also, I am unsure if they'd update the pages about game elements to be accurate to the beta releases or the standard.  Everyone plays on the current beta, AFAIK, but it is technically still beta.

Sounds more like they made golems a pain in the ass to use.

At least the AI doesn't flip out at the first sign of one in your hands as-is.

Actually, they're less of a pain in the ass to use, since the AI doesn't flip shit as soon as you own one and start activating it.

But once you get them they are no longer as useful. Sending them through certain warps was kind of ridiculous.
