Charcoal drawing is very easy and fun. I also have taken up sushi preparation. We have an Asian market ran by a Japanese family really close by, with plenty of fresh fish and nori. In particular I like unagi, but it's hard to grill without drying it out.

There's not a whole lot you can learn without expending money. Over the summer, I coughed up $150 and home-forged my own spatha, tower shield, and breastplate. Over the next school break, I'm going to cough up alot more in order to make me some platelegs, mail shirt, and a helmet. Thing is, it's fun enough to do that you really don't care how much you spent. Unless you're broke, and not being stingy, then I see no reason why you can't just suck it up.

Amazing things can be done with basic metalworking tools(Hand tools, not machines), sheet aluminum and some hard work.

Look, seriously. There's not a whole heckuva lot to learn for free except for online sources. You can try alot of the things at home, but none of us have found out how to pull things out of our arses. The best I can think of for cheap factor would be looking into calligraphy and cartography.
