How to get rid of a couple of pesky rocks?
« on: August 27, 2009, 10:11:11 am »

I have a problem in my fortress.
It's not goblins (although they will be if I don't fix this soon), carp or nobles.
It's rocks. There are four of them sitting in the way of my fortifications on my outer wall. I tried designating a dumping zone and ordered the rocks to be dumped, but my dwarfs won't listen. There's like 10 of them with "No Job" and nobody want's do dump them. Both the rocks and the dumping area seem accessible and I check to make sure they aren't forbidden. The dwarfs also refuse to use the rocks for building even though the fortifications are suppose to be made from the same rock (microcline and granite). Also, the rocks are somehow in stacks of two, so is that the cause?
Anyways, how do I get rid of them?

(d)esignate, (b), (h)ide

problem solved.  (since they're actually inside of fortifications, they can't be dealt with unless you destroy the fortificaiton.  Although, theoretically, if you caused a pressurized flood of water, you might be able to blast them out.

I can imagine how it would look, trying to pop a boulder through an arrow-slit with water like it's a rubber ball.

Makes one think, what are the physics behind the materials in DF?

I mean, just about anything is immune to magma if constructed, even wood. Anything can be wedged through tight spaces, provided enough water pressure, and yet retain it's shape; unless it's organic; and socks are able to dismember or even explode creatures, provided a skillful enough throw.

DF physics are bizarre.

No, no, they're not inside the fortifications, they're in the way of the fortifications, so my dwarfs can't build them.

I'll assume you're trying to build those fortifications:

Rocks must be unforbidden (you checked that), dwarfs must have the refuse hauling job, a garbage zone must be designated and active, all things concerned must be accessible, and you need to have dwarfs gather refuse from outside in the [o ]rders menu (if the rocks are outside).

For building the fortifications, make sure you're using rocks that aren't tasked for something else, like dumping, otherwise the construction will be canceled.  After that, make sure the rocks are unforbidden and the construction hasn't been suspended.  Then, make sure nothing is in the way of the construction ... like other rocks.  The dwarfs will move any items in the way during construction, but only if those items haven't been tasked for something else, like dumping or building.  Also, you need a mason.  Edit: You must also be able to reach the construction from the sides, not just diagonally, or they won't get built.  Some can still be built diagonally, but will never be tasked until they can be reached diagonally.

You have stacks as in, for example, "granite [2]"?  Or stacks as in two lines of "granite"?  The former is bizarre.  The latter is normal and not a problem.

No, no, they're not inside the fortifications, they're in the way of the fortifications, so my dwarfs can't build them.

OH!!!!!

Because you have them designated to be dumped, they cannot be moved out of the way of the constructions.  And if they're the stones that are trying to be used in order to construct those fortifactions, they will not be dumped either.

Un-designate them, cancel the fortifaction buildings, and then make sure those stones aren't being used for constructions eleswhere.   Then try to build the fortifacitons again.

I got the same problem recently, some logs were on the path of my wall, designated for dump for weeks, never moved. I dug a channel on the tile.

Quick question: is this a reclaim fortress? Because if it is, any items that were being used in tasks when you abandoned are completely untouchable when you reclaim. The only way to free them up is to move them, but the dwarves won't touch them ordinarily. That basically means you can a) channel the floor out from under the item, b) hope that a thief steals them (don't think normal stone blocks are valuable enough to be targeted though), c) try to push them with a water flow, or d) try to melt them with magma. That last option won't move them, of course, but they'd be gone, and that's all that matters, right?

Here's a visual I made in paint:

1. Regular exposed fortification
2. Boulder in the way
3. Full water pressure
4. *POP*

How is that possible? Undamaged fortifications and a whole boulder out the other end. ???

EDIT:
This would be awesome to have on a t-shirt.

Merged items (in this case, furry rocks) aren't behind fortifications, they are inside them.  In DF, water moves only in quantized amounts, and travels at a constant velocity before instantaneously stopping.  This is the precise velocity for the mass of any item to diffuse at a quantum level into the structure, thus being trapped.  More water flowing through a fortification will further diffuse the item, releasing it from the fortification.

Okay, thanks for the quick replies. I guess I'll just leave the rocks there and eventually someone will dump them.

You say this is an outside wall?

Under 'o'rders->'r'efuse, make sure "Dwarves Collect Refuse from Outdoors" is on. It's off by default and dumping is treated as refuse hauling.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.
