I've a small request of the Other Games board. A few chaps and I occasionally go to play a game together, but are weighed down by me: my laptop can hardly run anything 3D. Morrowind, at best, sometimes.

So, does anyone know of any fun, freeware multiplayer games to play? Any format is acceptable, but they need to be 4+ players. MMOs aren't preferable, as they're not really things you to for fun for about an hour.

Because if I lose one more game of monopoly I'm bound to strangle somebody.

Scorched Earth, one of my first PC games, one of my favourite games. It's a bit like worms but with tanks and it's shareware, wikipedia describes:

...tanks do turn-based battle in two-dimensional terrain, with each player adjusting the angle and power of his or her tank turret before each shot.

But it's better than that makes it sound.

http://springrts.com/ is a freeware RTS engine originally inspired by the game Total Annihilation. System requirements are fairly lenient.

Me and my cousins used to play that at every reunion.
We had a strategy so that we didn't have to help out; put it on 100 rounds, and whenever we got asked, we said after this game.

That description reminds me of a demo program that came with Quick Basic... giant gorillas throwing explosive bananas at each other through the city's skyline. I see the Worms series as its spiritual successor.

Well. The "adjust angle and power to hit stuff" games are all more or less the same game. IIRC scorched earth was the first, and if it wasnt, it was definetly the one with the most impact.

Soldat. Great game, Ive been playing it for like 5 years. Doesnt need a powerhouse computer, and is loads of fun, has a huge competitive side and is hugely modable.

Ever thought of trying a MUD for size?  Requires nothing more than a telnet connection to work the text-only input and output interface (though using a dedicated MUD client may help the non-geek, and highly configurable by those who want to).  And most clients and MUDs are free (there are pay/pay-for-more-features versions of each around, I've never felt the need to try any of either, though).

Unless you only want you and your mates wandering round the world concerned (in which case there's ways of sorting that out, in some MUDs, or else get yourself a private incarnation of one by one means or another).

I would be totally biased in suggesting, say, the totally enthralling Discworld mud, so I won't single that out for special treatment.  No, not at all.  The fact that there's a degree of memetic similarity (indeed, it was denizens of that place who pointed me at DF) should have absolutely no bearing on anything.  Definitely not.

Enemy Territory, the freeware, team-based multiplayer portion of Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I'm not sure how it compares to Morrowind requirement-wise, but it ought to run on some settings. I'd just avoid playing on graphically modded servers, those can look really attrocious.

What is the connection info for the Discworld MUD?  I want to try it out, but the web site doesn't give you the address and port, just a "play now" link which doesn't do anything for me.  I just want to connect with MUSHclient...

Mabinogi runs pretty well on my somewhat subpar laptop. Not sure it it will on yours though. Though that's not entirely free as there's stuff you can buy.

For sheer fun, Scorched Earth is incredible. It wasn't the first, I believe tank wars was, but it pretty much nails the whole angle and power bit. Best part is, you can go from basic shot hits like a small nuke to deaths head barely does anything with the settings.

You might try finding a copy of the original Quake. That shouldn't need too much power.
