I haven't played too many adjust-the-angle-and-power-type games, but I did used to love Blast Doors.  Dig the enemy into a hole and flood it with napalm...  Oh, those were good times.

Wow, a low spec 3D scorched earth. I have 3D scorched earth on my linux box, but it is horrendously slow.

What is the connection info for the Discworld MUD?  I want to try it out, but the web site doesn't give you the address and port, just a "play now" link which doesn't do anything for me.  I just want to connect with MUSHclient...
Already been answered, IP-wise (may or may not be static enough for long-term purposes), but if you check the "Playing" and "Getting Started" info on the page, you get (very early on, at the end of first paragraph of the first main section, which is entitled "Connecting") you get "[...] connect to discworld.atuin.net on port 23 or 4242."

The "Play now" link tot he left also gives a minimal (but sufficient, it at least gives colours) Java client that should be sufficient for trying out a newbie/guest character, though.  Unless you're really into your MUDs can't live without a whole lot of compatible aliases you're already compiled, of course.

I played for years using only the Java client.  Only moving to MUSHClient (smoothly under WINE) when I changed to a Linux box that just wouldn't let me get Java running properly (I know, but it didn't).  I never did migrate to client-side aliasing, and the other available nicities, but I admit that the absence of logging was something that I particularly don't regret losing (<= note the double negating, IYSWIM) in making that particular move.

Wow, nineteen replies. Thank you very much! I will try all of these I haven't tried yet.

I can actually run Quake Live. It's less of a spec error so much as a very finnicky GPU-- Quake Live runs okay, *sometimes* Half Life 2 runs with about 10-20 FPS... Half Life 1 has about 3 FPS. It makes my brain hurt.

I've been meaning to try the discworld mud. I've always been a fan of the series, started with The Colour of Magic and the last one I read was Reaper Man.

Scorched Earth looks fun. It seems as though games like "Gunbound" were inspired by it pretty heavily.

Soldat! I remember that. I played it very briefly; it's similar to Liero (Xtreme?). That could be a lot of fun.

I think I tried Mabinogi once. It ran sometimes, based on (I believe) the exact formation of the stars, the lunar state, and whether or not Saturn was obstructed by another planet. I've been meaning to try it again, though. I found a huge turbo fan pointed into the side of my computer cools it and actually significantly boosts performance.

Doesn't Mabinogi go completely against what you were looking for?  It's an MMO, and some of the dungeons literally take hours to complete.

I used to play on the Tarlach server, myself, but I kind of drifted off to another MMO -- partly because of weird lag problems, and partly because I got very bored in my quest to master the herbalism skill (it's at rank 1 now).

Hrm, I also remember Soldat, from waaaaay back.

Lemme know if you want to check out soldat. I have a private server (dedicated host) I can show you the ropes on, and a good public server to play in.

Since you mentioned it I've played far too much of this game hehe. It's a shame there aren't more weapons and it has crashed a few times for me with bombs freezing in mid air, the whole thing hangs and I have to quit. Pretty good game though, I think they got the 3D just right.

Yeah, it's a real shame they abandoned it in beta.  Given a little more tinkering it could have turned out to be a real gem.  Hell, I consider it a gem even in its incomplete, buggy state...  I still play it now and then.
