Old cat is annoying
« on: August 26, 2009, 01:52:25 pm »

One day, my mom watched one of those pet adoption and they had this old cat name "Queenie" on it. Toothless, skinny, and deaf, my mom said she was adorable and decided to adopt her. We get her and are explained about how to take care of her and then we just do that. Soon, my room starts smelling horrible and when I was up there, Queenie walks in and I catch her about to pee next to my ladder. I scared her away and I put up an old project board to barricade. Then, my mom and sister's room starts smelling bad. Queenie has been peeing under there, too. My mom buys a gate for my door and uses the project board  for her door. Then, after a few weeks of only a bad smelling litter box, she begins peeing under the table in my kitchen and in our tub. We then moved the gate from my door to the hallway door, so she can't get in. Then she peed in this end table in my living room, destroying my sister's sheet music and sketchbook. Now I find her sleeping behind my computer and behind the stove. I also found out recently that she destroyed a book of mine that came from the most awesome teacher ever.  :(

My mom tried to punish her by putting her outside, but an hour later, she had me bring her back in because she's deaf and all of the outside cats in my neighborhood die by getting hit by cars. Now my mom absolutely hates her and wants to get a cage from a store and just take care of her from there.

The even more annoying part is when she's hungry, she'll stay near us meow like there's no tomorrow and clawing at our clothes. She also stared at my mom while she was asleep and she would start meowing when my mom's eyes would even twitch. A lot of times we wouldn't have food for her since she could only eat canned food. Also, when she does use a litter box, she misses most of the time, peeing next to the litter box.

She is the only one who doesn't no where to go out of 2 cats and 2 dog.

A belt sander will solve all your problems.

Unscrew some power sockets from the wall, wait for "accident" to happen.

Discipline.  The fact that your cat pees on everything is the fact that you let it run all over you.  DON'T GIVE INTO THE CAT.  SMACK IT IF HE DOES SOMETHING INAPPROPRIATE.

It seems that you guys took on a responsibility without realising there would actually be some extra work involved.

Unfortunately what you need to do is (Re)housetrain the cat. Not all Cats magically catch on.

Ok forget "Extra work" this is starting to seem like "Normal Work" this is all things healthy cats can happen to do. In fact some cats will bite your nose while your asleep.

If the Cat doesn't overeat you can just give her all the food she needs for the day. As for the Litterbox she isn't so much missing as she doesn't want to use it. Cleaning out the Litterbox more often may help.

Hmm, though it does sound like the Meowing can become excessive. I don't know how to handle cats who take this to the next level.

We never did give in. My sister squirts her with water. I smack her. My mom shoves her nose in whatever she does.

I am completely unsure how to houstrain a cat.
As a note, she lived in a house full of cats for most of her life.

This makes a LOT of sense for everything she does.

I mean afterall she had to compete for attention and use of the litterbox and even food.

If Cats are ANYTHING like Dogs... This doesn't work. You either Catch them in the act or forget it. (Then again that is a good reason she pees under the bed. Because you punish her for peeing where you can see her)

It's true, if you don't punish a dog while it's doing it or immediately after, it will associate the mess with punishment instead of the act itself.  That's why dogs always seem to go in the floor and then act guilty about it.

Real Help: you're screwed.  Old cats simply can't be taught discipline, and she's going to keep peeing on everything as her way of saying, where she is, she owns it.  This is especially compounded by bringing a new cat into a situation where there's already other animals.  Trust me on this - it always fails.

I hate to sound cruel, but honestly, it's deaf, needs help eating, probably has all sorts of other health problems, and by the sound of could be senile too.  Put the poor thing out of it's misery already.  Life isn't always worth dragging out to the bitter end.

I have no idea what you're talking about in that last part, Aqizzar. She's deaf, not blind, and she can still partially hear. She only needs us to put food out for her, not help her eat it. She only has a bad ear.

Just because I found a picture of her:

Ohhh that thing is going to shed.  You're going to have cat hair coating every surface of your house.

For real, man.
