I'm sure some of you have seen some buzz about this game in various places. I was surprised when my forum search on "Newerth" returned nothing.

Anyway, it's a game in development for the PC. You may recognize its name from Savage and Savage II, which were made by the same company. The game is currently in some [open|closed] beta status. Keys can be obtained sporadically through its Facebook page. There are still roughly 60k keys up as of this writing, but they seem to go fast. I claimed a key from a previous giveaway and one from the most recent, so I might as well hand one out to anyone who wants one. I haven't played yet as my PCs are crap and I don't expect them to run this game.

IZ DAT SUM DOTA?

I played Savage 1 for a while, it was okay.  Never played Savage 2, and looking at that video made me want nothing to do with this.

I should really have researched the game before blindly signing up. I've never watched any videos whatsoever.

Seconded. I'll bet they're even using the WC3 engine.

Reminds me of this game, light and dark. Obvious DOTA is still sucky.

Its an EXACT clone of dota. The engine is made by them, and adds shiny to the game, but if you have played dota, you have played this. Boring.

I never liked DoTA, it always frustrated me looking for a friendly match of Warcraft 3 and all I would find is DoTAs.

Heh, strange. I just made a Warcraft thread without even seeing this.

If anybody still wants to try this out, I have a 5 invites for the first 5 to message me.

Its really an awesome game and coming from someone with no DotA experience it has an addicting gameplay. They are working hard to make it their own and are adding new heroes almost weekly.

The community may be daunting at first for those without DotA but fast learners will find that it is really fun.

EDIT: A snippet from the beta site:

Quote
You are about to play a stand alone DotA based game. We have asked IceFrog if he had any objections to this and he did not, he is ok with it. Heroes of Newerth contains both content very similiar to DOTA and brand new content of S2 Games' creation.

We wanted to take a moment to share with you why it is very important you do not share this information with anyone, and to give some insight as to why we chose to create Heroes of Newerth:

   1. At S2, we're huge fans of DOTA, and were pained to see how it was being held back on the warcraft 3 engine. DOTA style gameplay deserves a stand alone game so competition can be taken to the next level. As a MOD, DOTA faces many obstacles and boundaries that a stand alone title like Heroes of Newerth does not.
   2. We also felt that the experience of playing and finding DOTA games online could use some drastic improvement. With HoN, there are many features and tools to make playing online (both with friends and by yourself) a much easier and more enjoyable experience. Your position as testers will help us perfect and fine tune these features, as well as allow us to see how they perform under various conditions.

I don't get all the DOTA hate. I can understand hating the community that is often a little immature, but the game itself is fun and pretty deep.

It's all about the community, really.

At work:
"Hey, anyone up for a LAN game of Warcraft 3?"
"Sure, why not, I'll give it a shot"
"Okay, starting the server..."
"...  This is DOTA.  >:E"

I guess it's...kinda deep, I guess?  But it seems like it has about the depth of your average web game.  Simple enough for ENDLESS HORDES of people to get into, and they seemed to play it obsessively.  It's, like, the Counterstrike of RTSes:  Shallow and simple for its genre, and loved by many because of it.

Also this, it's even more absurdly popular in Europe:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OzWIFX8M-Y

...OKAY I HATE DOTA FOR THIS CATCHY MUSIC OKAY

I never played Dota...

Played Demigod first, which I really liked, but it had the worst match making system. That game is still totally plagued by terrible netcode.

Played HoN a bit, felt like I died in seconds, wasn't a fan.

I love LoL though. I have spend many many hours on that game and paid zero monies for it.

I think people pick it up, get destroyed, get yelled at by their team, and never play again, which is really a shame and leads to all the DOTA sytle hate.

The game isn't shallow in any way, there is tons of stragety and tactics, more than enough to keep you learning about your favorite hero after 200+ games.
