Q: Have you played DotA?

If the answer is yes, then give it a try. If the answer is no, don't bother.

I had never played DotA and so when I gave HoN a try I basically went through 6 months of ridicule and elitist rage before I could play the game with any sort of competence. I only got this far through sheer stubbornness.

DotA...DotA...

Oh, Defense of the Ancients.  No, I have not played DotA.  Or really any RTS game made before 1995, between the years of 1996-1999, 2000-2004, and 2005-2008.

(I played C&C Red Alert--the first one--Homeworld, Perimeter, and AI War: Fleet Command, and a little SupCom--I played 2 maps of one race)

Heroes of Newerth=DotA clone

They are good games but have shitty communities.

(On another note, no Red Alert 2? That is an awesome game.)

Which is why I play LoL. The community is considerably better. You still have the occasional idiot (about as common as any other online game) but it's not like DotA where about 60-70% of the players are the type who bitch at ANYBODY who is better / worse than them, intentionally feed when they're pissed, and just generally act ridiculous.

Well League of Legends is not perfect, but considerably better than DOTA or HON.

I should get to playing HON again. The key to finding a good server is hosting one yourself. Just kick anyone with more than 1500 points and you're fine. There are some irksome assholes with less 1300 points, but they are rare endangered species.

I hate HoN for the sole reason that it lags horribly on my computer. I don't know why, maybe it's because I'm in Malaysia/Australia. You don't even want a second of lag when playing a twitch game like that, and the 10 second lags make it completely unplayable. And I hate the "WTF THE LAGGING N00B IS MAKEING US LOSE" comments.

I also dislike it because it is an exact clone, but pretends it isn't. It clones, then flips everything entirely. Some Heart becomes a Helm. Orbs become Armor. Bracers become Necklaces. It's really annoying for a DoTA player to find out what does what, even though they do the same thing. Imagine a shooter where the right mouse button shoots and the left button opens the menu, and instead of WASD, they use HBNM. It's like that, but even worse because the item builds are what give DoTA-like games its steep learning curve.

Finally, I don't like it because it doesn't have the same creative streak as DoTA. DoTA has changed a lot since HoN was released and for the better. Its advantage was being well.. different. HoN is just shinier.. after a while, it's not so pretty anymore; just average by indie standards. And I'm not paying anything for an exact clone of another game.

So, yeah, I'm going to stick to DoTA.

For you DoTA haters, the genre is great. I find WC3 greatly lacking in strategy. It's just a micromanagement fest. DoTA is IMHO, like an RTS, but without the need to create new units. You just attack or defend the base, try to outmanuever your enemies, figure out counter-tactics to their fights. It's RTS without the micromanagement. The computer creates and upgrades your units automatically for you; you just decide where the brunt of your forces should be.

I never played DotA, but love HoN.
The recently added matchmaking system really helps avoid stacked teams. Now during open beta is a great time to try it out for anyone who is curious.

Afraid I have to disagree Muz's assessment that it is an exact clone that pretends not to be. They never tried to claim that they were not copying HoN exactly in many areas. And the fact is that they've got back to many heroes and items and heavily tweaked the stats, and also added plenty of completely new heroes and items. They've also added lots of little features like stat-tracking and rejoining games when you get disconnected, and much more which provides an overall smoother and more enjoyable experience.

I wouldn't mind if they recreated the exact same items and only renamed the heroes, but when you clone an item and do something else, it's just confusing. Like if you had a very popular shooter, where there's this big-ass weapon called a rocket launcher that's slow but kills with one shot and a fast but weak gun called a plasma rifle. Then someone else makes a clone, and puts in a plasma rifle that's slow and kills with one shot and a rocket launcher that's fast but weak. That's how it feels. Now make it so that you have only 10 seconds to pick from hundreds of items before people yell at you.

I do like HoN for being more professional, like how they track leavers, let you play with others of your own skill, balance teams, stats, and rejoining. But the lag is one thing that should never be in a game like that.

The new heroes and items don't really add anything new to the game. I can play the game happily without any of them. The feel is kinda like if someone made a graphical DF clone, added halflings, gnolls, and slings to it, and removed kobolds and short swords. I don't really feel like I'm missing out on anything and I don't expect it to have the same creative flow that I enjoyed.

Sorry for necroing that topic but I just wanted to say that Heroes of Newerth is now free to play.

Just like LoL, you have 15 heroes per week and you can buy new ones with silver coins (you earn them while playing the game) or gold coins (actual cash).

People who already bought the game before have access to all the heroes at anytime.

Also Necroing. Surprised this isn't as popular as the LoL thread, given they are both free, same genre games.

Anyway I am having a problem. When I start a game, I get a loading screen waiting for other people to join. And it doesn't go away. The game starts, people select their champions, I can't select miine, and it's STILL there after I start my game with my randomly selected champion. I have to close HoN, then reconnect to play. Someone please tell me you have a solution because it seems the HoN forums don't.

Because LoL managed to not only clone dota but also do changes that made it easier to start out for new players.

The item shop is FAR more intuitive.
Creeps and towers cannot be denied.
No gold loss on death (comebacks are far easier).
The exp system let's players catch on easier than in HoN (exp for killing lower level champions is diminished while killing higher level champs gives more exp).
The community is a tiny bit more friendly... but it's still a DotA clone so expect a legion of angry virgins.

Basically people who start out in the moba genre play LoL because it's more newb friendly making them more likely stay.

HoN on the other hadn has a horde of 1337 players who memorized every phrase from the dicktionary and actively use it to insult the current person with the worst KDR ratio in the game (usually in his team). This combined with the totally botched up item shop and denying (the the enemy in your lane is good at it don't expect any gold or exp unless you are equal or better at it) meaning the newb is just left there getting insulted by everyone.
And then he uninstalls the game.

As for your problem...
Did you try deactivating your firewall?
I had a similar problem in LoL and deactivating the firewall (not adding the ame to exeptions) helped.

I've been debating figuring out HoN recently, even got all the way to downloading it and doing parts of the tutorial. I stopped when I had this same problem during the tutorial ("Move your hero to the waypoint." "I'M TRYING BUT IT WON'T CLICK" "Move your hero to the waypoint." "I'M TRYING!), so we'll see if disabling my firewall helps. After that it's mostly an issue of figuring out what items are available I think, because I played Warcraft 3 and enough of the original DoTA to know how the stat system works.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.
