Crippled Liaison
« on: August 26, 2009, 08:50:58 am »

I've ran into this little problem and I'm unsure what to do with it.

I've made yet another fortress in the side of a mountain, a lot of stones are still littering the place in front of my entrance and trade depot, so when the first autumn arrived I got the message that "wagons could not access my trade depot".

That was fine with me, for I'd work on stone hauling and road building when I'd finally get some immigrants after trading with the merchants on foot. Except.. I couldn't find the dwarven liaison anywhere. I looked around and located him unconcious and crippled (both of his legs are gray) not that far north of my fortress across the mountain slope.

I have no idea how this happened, there aren't any enemies on the map yet that I know of, plus he was moving with an armed escort. I take it he fell down the mountain? A bit odd for a dwarf.. but is there anything I can do?

I have barracks with free beds set up, I have one dwarf assigned to do only health care, but he won't move up to the liaison to drag him into a bed. I take it this is because the dwarven liaison isn't part of my fortress?

Will it break off future trades with the homeland and interrupt the flow of immigrants if he dies there? Do you think I should start over, and what can I do to prevent an issue like this in the future?

Sometimes in the history generation, liaison's get attacked and take rather severe injuries. Something along the lines of "MY LEGS, WHERE ARE MY LEGS".

Well, looks like your Liaison is a write-off. If he's unconscious, he can't do his job, which is to talk. If you want to do something different, you could build a house around him, and connect it to your fort with an underground tunnel. If he ever is conscious enough to do something, he just might be able to talk trade deals with you. Although that seems rather unlikely. In the miracle case it does happen, I figure it'd take a few years to complete the deal.

He won't die of hunger or thirst though, because liaison's are hardy like that.

This sort of thing isn't easy to prevent though. At best, you can have some sort of safe passageway meant for traders and diplomats, but if history screws you over, then you can just shrug it off and make do with the merchant's bringing whatever they want.

Surround him with cage traps, if he ever moves a tile he'll promptly be cuaght when he once agian falls unconcsious, then you can display the amazing unconscious liasion in you're meeting area, or you know free him in your fort if you're into that sort of stuff.

If you kill him (using magma hopefully).  Will you get a new one next year?

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

'm afraid not. So you'd be stuck with not being able to make requests from caravans. On the other hand, it does free you from having to monitor your trader/mayor to make sure they do go to the meeting (always look for the aluminum lining - or failing that, magma  ;D )

Hmm, this makes me wonder: What happens if the liaison dies during world gen?
And if a new one was to magically appear in that particular case: Does that mean that a new fort near the same civilization would have access to a liaison again?

Cool. I've seen diplomat guards or something similar in the raws but I have never seen one of my diplomats arrive with bodyguards. It's pretty cool though; did you do any modding? Or am I just unlucky? I've never had any escorts for my liasons.

I had a Liaison Retire from his position in World Gen and no one stepped up to replace him. I got to the second Autumn when I started thinking WTF???
So I Savescumed out to go look at the legends. He had gone and made himself a little country farm only 2 years before I started my Outpost and was still alive. The bugger was also a Legendary Ranger before becoming a Liaison. The bastard. Come back to work!!!

I'm pretty sure liasons that are killed get replaced? Mine always seem to die to sieges and I'm sure I've seen replacements...

Hmm, no. I think I was being unclear. I meant the caravan guards. At least my current depot has an axedwarf and hammerdwarf near it whom don't belong to my fortress. And they traveled along the same path that the liaison did.

Well thanks for the replies everyone. I've decided to start over and just hope for the best this upcoming autumn. I kind of do want a liaison to take my requests as I started off without an anvil, and I want to make sure I have one within 18 months without buying one at the embark screen. Caravans don't always carry them. I'm also not sure if a dead liaison affects the influx of immigrants.

I'm not going to bother with modding until I at least have some more experience under my belt with this amazing (and sometimes quizzical) game.

@Jaap
In my experience, even when I don't ask for them most of my dwarf and human caravans bring me anvils every time. The only things that are truly important to request are flux when you don't have any; most metals you'll be able to get from the humans if the dwarves aren't bringing any and you can't find them in the mines.
