Welcome to Rapture
« on: August 26, 2009, 04:01:33 am »

I made a fort underwater. I channeled magma to the edge of a cliff, then built a floor with walls on either side extending into the middle of the ocean. The magma flows into the ocean, creates walls, and I dig through.

I now have a fort in the middle of the ocean, connected with bridges to the mainland. I will post pictures when it gets more developed. This is the best thing I have ever done.

Post pics as soon as you can! Sounds awesome. I wonder, if it's possible to make a flying machine would it be possible to make a boat?

Boats would be possible.... hm. You'd need to be pushed along by the tide, which would lend itself to have a screwpump on a plank behind the boat pushing water into the proper back, pushing it along. Another screw pump on the other side would be needed to push it back, and only one could be on at any one time. I think the impromptu screw-motor would have to be AC, because otherwise it would constantly push 7/7 water into the space behind the boat which wouldn't be useful for pushing the boat, so the water has to be allowed to get back to 2 or 3, which also requires a fair bit of draining the sea down to 2/3 on the top level.

Main thing is, it can be done.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.

I've never heard of any way to move constructed walls in any direction but destructively down.

That's why I said you'd need screwpumps as motors. I hadn't thought about the sinking of materials yet... bugger. Maybe it has to be more like a tramline, held up by pillars...

It still wouldn't move though.

Would you kindly post pictures?

No constructions in this game actually move yet, we don't quite have propulsion.
Unless I'm missing some funny joke here.

Well, you know the way that water flow pushes items? Surely it could be made to push freestanding walls and stuff or in this case, a boat made of constructions.

I've never tested it and I'm trying to think of how to create free-standing constructions, but if those can be done, it will work.

S> = screwpump direction
__ = walls
765> = water flow
765>
7__________
2S>765>|       |
2S>765>|____|

surely that layout would cause water pressure to push a free standing object?

Perhaps in a few years, yes, at the moment though you're limited to pushing items and creatures only, constructions of any type are still stuck in one position whether they're attached to anything or not.
