Crap. Ok, all of this has been for nothing. now I have to go and weep great tears of misery. OR play DF.

I cant fathom why you needed an 'or' in this statement. DF induces its own.

The problem is that it's not possible to have freestanding constructions. If they're not linked to something with a stable base, they'll collapse.   :(

If it weren't for that fact my plan would've worked perfectly. Sometimes I wonder why I play DF. It's usually at exactly the same point as my dwarves do something REALLY stupid for no decent reason. Normal stupidity is ok, but crazy, over the top, epic fuck ups make me grasp my face in confused desperation.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Render it in 3Dwarf. Render it in 3Dwarf! RENDER IT IN 3DWARF!
Yuck. Visual Fortress, please!

I made a fort underwater. I channeled magma to the edge of a cliff, then built a floor with walls on either side extending into the middle of the ocean. The magma flows into the ocean, creates walls, and I dig through.

I now have a fort in the middle of the ocean, connected with bridges to the mainland. I will post pictures when it gets more developed. This is the best thing I have ever done.
Aww man, you beat me to it. I was going to do the same thing.

Like a suggestion I made for vis-fortress. We need transparent water/glass/magma for these purposes.

I bet they'd look awesome.

Here is the magma tunnel leading out into the ocean. It dumped off the end, after which I closed the floodgates and dug down into it. I'm in the process of building a bridge to the mainland. One z-level below are obsidian walls. The ocean floor is below that, so i only had to do this once. I got pretty lucky. The water in the center of the ocean is just waves that crashed onto the top.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I will post more pictures when the above-ground section becomes more developed, and eventually upload a map to the archives. I think this will turn out pretty sweet. I've already had two dorfs drown by having a pool melt with them standing on it, which was frustrating, but I'll manage.
