Inglourious Basterds
« on: August 25, 2009, 08:22:47 pm »

I can honestly say that this is the best film I've seen in the last 5 years. It might not be for everyone for sure, but those people have something wrong with them and I will ignore them. You, on the other hand, the discerning man looking for complete entertainment, will find much to be had with this show.

Basically, it's about Jews fighting back against 1944 Nazis. I won't spoil anything, since everything I say will ruin the amazing-ness of the show, but really, in Tarantino's words. It's a spaghetti western set in Nazi occupied France.

Also, the villain in this show is incredible beyond words.

Watch it!

If you haven't seen it, why talk about what you think it looks like?  Anyway...

Anyway, I saw it.  I'm not going to say it was bad, because it wasn't.  It was good.  But Tarantino is getting too Tarantino for his own good.  Out of three hours, it's like 30 minutes of Brad Pitt jokes, 30 minutes of action, 30 minutes of the visual equivalent of purple prose, and an hour and a half of awkward silences and meandering conversations that eventually wrap back around to some plot point.

Basically, it's a movie that you have to know how to deconstruct movies to appreciate, and even then the extended drag-it-out-until-it's-funny scenes still weren't that entertaining.  That said, I certainly appreciated all the references to old ridiculous war movies, and that Tarantino had the balls to throw in a completely bullshit ending and just leave it sitting there.  Who says period movies have to be historical?

Or you could just switch your brain off and enjoy the jokes as they come, but at the theater I saw it, most of the people that method would apply too nearly walked out on the interracial kiss.

My brother saw it and walked out because it bored him.  I don't like Quentin Tarantino because I don't like Quentin Tarantino fans.  I don't plan on seeing it.

I might watch it, but only because Brad Pitt is a BADASS. I mean really, in Fight Club, he played a soapmaker, and STILL made him look cool. I never get rid of soapmakers in my forts.

I saw it and I liked it. Keep one thing in mind though, it is NOT and action movie and it has almost nothing to do with the "Basterds" so much as it revolves around the main villian and a pair of interchangable french-resistance female roles.

Brad Pitt is just there for comic relief with his Popeye-the-sailor-man jaw jutting and what not.

If you don't like the meandering and tense conversations that are in every Tarantino film ever, you might be wasting your time with this movie. I considered the interview of the dairy farmer, the bits with Hans Landa and the tavern scene to be the highlights of the movie.

Especially the tavern scene. That part was really good.

Saw it. I like it, however it wasn't... As funny as it was hyped up to be. It was funny, but I was disappointed by how the one bit they showed in the ads for it that made me lol hard wasn't in it.

At all.

My favourite bit was, when

Oh man. The bit with the dairy farmer. The interrogation technique he used was brilliant and amazing! I loved every nuance of expression on Christoph Waltz's face, the sweat, the speech. I was on the edge of my seat because you just knew that the entire thing was a scam but there just wasn't that extra enough juice to really be able to predict it.

I must agree that the females in this movie were quite sub par compared to the male leads but... it was still a good performance. Just not excellent like the rest.

I don't like Quentin Tarantino because I don't like Quentin Tarantino fans.

Well, I certainly can't see any issues with the rationality of this statement.

I'm not exactly sure how to interpret that. If 'fan' doesn't just mean 'watched and liked Kill Bill' (even though they pulled some physics/logic bullcrap), carry on. I'm the latter, and I'm not entirely sure what necessarily qualifies a Tarantino fan.

I saw this movie a few hours ago.

I enjoyed it, it was very good. I've heard District 9 is better.
But this was indeed a very good film.

It's actually an appropriate response, considering what the awesomeface implies.
