Adamantine Vein question [possible SPOILERS]
« on: August 25, 2009, 07:57:20 pm »

So, I know that you need to be careful digging out Adamantine, and I just hit four veins in my first winter.

So that I have an idea how careful I need to be (question in spoiler)

I am also VERY upset that I will have stupid nobles rushing my place before useful people get here...

They meet, and you die. Fortunately with four veins it's quite easy to tell where the junction point is.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I have about 7 veins that seem to be converging. at this point they are far enough apart that you could get one of those oval-shaped stone inclusions in between them. I figure I can pretty safely do the next level down, but not much after that...

The thing that really disappoints me is that I need to hurry up and get my defenses ready now, because of the MASSIVE increase in fortress wealth that I just incurred... I've still only got my original 7... 8P

You might consider killing the nobles(or locking them in a room and forgetting about them) before they get a chance to go insane because you aren't giving them royal everything.  And for defense, channel out the front gate of your fortress, put in a retractable bridge and link it to a lever.  Retract the bridge if enemies show up and you're fine.  Makes a great very quick makeshift defense.  Just wait out sieges until they leave.  Goblins and elves tend to stick around for about a season, whereas humans stick around a lot longer, with some accounts keeping them for over a year.  Underground farming isn't a problem and you probably can get a secured water source without TOO much effort, assuming you have a brook or river.  This means that if necessary, you can stay hermetically sealed underground indefinitely.

I can confirm that this is still the case. I'd never had any first hand experience with HFS, so yesterday I decided to embark on top of one with 7 miners and start digging.

When I encountered the vein I figured I could dig around it (that is, dig away at the normal rock but not mine out any of the adamantine), but even then I ended up breaching the chamber.

What does adamantine look like in 3d?

Does it look like a hand?

Don't kill your nobles; when you have your adamantine you can make some quick adamantine furniture and bump room value. Meanwhile, as long as you give all of your nobles all the correct rooms and furniture, even if they are not correctly lavish, the nobles will not be wholy satisfied but they'll shouldn't go crazy. Anyways, it'll be a nice challenge anyways to keep your nobles happy even when you don't breach the HFS.

Also, it's just 'noble', one king, who is easy to please IMO, I hardly consider him a noble anyway, seeing as how the only thing he wants is some nice rooms.
The real nobles are only trigger-able by population.
