The Mac and Windows thread.
« on: August 25, 2009, 02:34:25 pm »

First of all, I am a die-hard PC user and will not give Macs even the benefit of a doubt. My most extensive use of a mac involves elementary school computer class (playing Yukon Trail and typing software), turning up the brightness of a mac, and installing Bejeweled on one. I irrationally hate anyone that praises Mac.

A Mac user, in my imagination, is a hipster who couldn't turn on their computer and couldn't find a free antivirus software (minus antivirus 2009).

That said, there's definitely things that make me go "Huh, I'm really putting up with that on the PC".

My computer BSODs once every eight hours of gaming or so due to a faulty sound card. I take a break when it happens. I didn't realize that until a mac commercial claimed that you have to deal with bugs with a PC :S

MS is better dude, hands down. In spite of putting up with a lot of BS (sadly mostly related to them trying to imitate mac) you can actually change things in your system. Macs don't let you tinker, and they're basically for people who can't tinker. In other words, the Mac audience:

*People who don't want to learn computers, but need their functions
*Bigots who think learning to use a computer makes you a nerd, or buy it for the brand (in effect, BECAUSE it costs more)
*People who are too damn stupid to figure out how to make their computer run like they want it

I suppose I am fortunate to not only know which cards work with my computer beforehand thanks to forward studies of reviews, but how to maintain a computer and avoid possible problems. I also save a goddam ton of money.

While I do agree some people would rather not mess with the hassle of viruses or maintenance(Which from my understanding of reviews not made in anger, you need to turn in to a mac store to get damn well anything fixed), know it is generally a good thing to research what one is getting into.

I am unsure what to think of Linux. I would like to try it with a more powerful computer, but the Linux users are irritating me as much as the Mac users. According to them, I should not even be on the internet with how many flaws Windows has that Linux improved upon.

Now note these are responses to idiots of these various different operating systems. They are the most vocal about their systems and judging from the number of genuinely smart and level-headed people who use each system they must be the quiet ones. They just find they work best when on the OS of their choice, and feel others should choose their own OS's depending on their needs. No "Oh, that OS sucks. Choose mine ;D."

I worked on an iMac with either OS 8 or OS 9 for four years while doing graphic design and that shit was horrible.

Never again

My middle school only had Macs as laptops and the computer lab was closed most of the day, so during school projects, we were forced to use Mac. Pretty, but fucking horrible.

I wouldn't have a problem with mac if it were possible to edit it yourself.  But no, you have to ship it off or take it to a store.  Providing that service should be enough without locking it down to those who like to tinker.

Plus, there's the incompatibility thing.  A lot of good (old) games are PC only, and if Macs became dominant, it would be too much effort just to keep up something to run the games on.  That would annoy me.

I know a guy at college who uses Mac exclusively. I once said to him "So... you're basically paying a couple hundred dollars extra...to suck Apple's dick?" and he said "You know what, that's a good point. Yea that's basically it". Dead seriously. he meant every word. I don't even know what to say about that.

It could just be that he assumed no rational argument would dissuade you.

Guys, FreeBSD is obvious the king of OS's.

Not only that, but the awesome mascot is a plus too. Being actual genetic UNIX is good too for people who care about that sort of thing.
