Flying animals as tactical bombers
« on: May 28, 2007, 06:05:00 am »

I don't know what brought this idea on, maybe it was watching "Chronicles of Narnia", maybe it was my recent obsession with flight sims or maybe Elves just piss me off so much that I'll think of any excuse to introduce them to the sweet smell of napalm.

Ahh napalm, such a simple concept. Essentially it's just a liquid fuel mixed with a thickening agent, similar incendiary weapons predate the invention of gunpowder by hundreds of years, search for "Greek Fire" in Wikipedia.

By all accounts this game will allow you to train animals as mounts, including flying creatures like dragons and griffins. Realistically they should be able to carry a barrel of "Dwarvern Fire" and conduct air strikes on targets of the player's choosing?

Off the battlefield these creatures could play a strategic bombing role. Imagine being able to raid and Elven village and set fire to the king's sacred tree palace before those little wood wearing wankers know whats happened?

Naturally these creatures should be hard to capture and VERY expensive to buy.

You ever play TA:K? Rats with bombs there. Cloaking too. Think about that. Flying invisible bomb carrying rats. Exactly what DF needs.

A dragon is really more of a gunship than a bomber, I'm thinking more along the lines of "One pass and haul ass".

Plus its fireballs don't badly hurt targets that are armored and extremely tough. On top of that dragons are supposed to be rare and exotic so it probably won't be practical to field them in numbers that will make Dwarvern air power a terror inducing Sword of Damocles hanging over the heads of eco-maniacal Elven rulers.

Also, the griffon or whatever should let off a terrifying scream when it's conducting the bombing run, like a Stuka.

Given that "Pattern Fliers" are on the list for the next release, perhaps we'll see some nicer Dragon attacks...

Ugh. I havn't got visited by a dragon. But I have visited one. If they can fly right up to the fort and ignore the siege weapons shotting at him.

Dragon + Bomb = Dwarf + AA gun?

Maybe you could have massive air battles between griphon mounting goblins and dwarven flying contraptions(comeplete with spikes of cheese) and watch your stupid haulers get slaughtered by the ground forces as they run to pick up an earring from the wreckages?

Why does this sound massively entertaining, despite being completely detrimental to a fortress?

Umm, I'm all for it, but that's a bit of an oxy-moronic statement.

Gnomes were only in WCII.
In WCIII they had a civil war in their own town and the alliance replaced them with dwarves.
