Yanks boycott Scotland!
« on: August 24, 2009, 09:48:33 pm »

So there is apparently a sentiment growing in the USA over the release of the man convicted of the Lockerbie Bombing that killed 270 people including 187 Americans.

Since I pefer bourbon over scotch anyways and the gas at the BP is about $0.02 more expensive then the Texaco, I think I might contribute to the boycott myself. Setting free a convicted mass murderer is absurd and I think I'll vote against it with my liquor consumption habits, what do you guys think?

To quote Muse:

Quote
And do you think you deserve your freedom
No I don't think you do
There's no justice in the world
There's no justice in the world
And there never was

To me it doesn't matter that 187 Americans died, it matters that 270 humans died. Whether they were from China, America, Spain or India, they are still people. So why the emphasis on the Americans?

Why the constant hard-on for all things related to Muse?

Because Americans are better then everybody else obviously.

Because in America, it's fashionable to boycott things, especially if they don't have much of anything to do with the matter at hand. I'll bet a lot of people just read [FOREIGN_NAME] and [BOMB] and signed right up with the boycott.

Still doesn't sound like he deserves to get out though. I suggest something involving levers.

Well, there are pretty much motives for everything.

But he probably had some leverage from a third party (first?)

Heh heh.  I remember when people were boycotting France because they pulled out of the coalition.  I never met one person who could explain to me coherently why they boycotting France, exactly.

I never got into the whole "Freedom Fries" nonsense either because I didn't think that France should be targeted for not agreeing with the WoT.

I can get behind a boycott of things Scotland exports because they freed a goddamn mass murderer from a life sentence.

Not to mention that the only thing Scotland exports is over-priced whiskey. I think I can comfortable live the rest of my life without that and I don't have to buy scotch and call it "Justice Juice" either.

Me and the other Americans on these forums would like to have some 'words' with you all on the general idea of Americans.

And don't take offense to this, but it is idiotic to think the specification of how many Americans were killed is due to the idea we are full of ourselves. If it was Chinese, Korean, French, British, Canadian, Russian or any other nations people, that particular nation would have a similar reaction. Their people were killed and the country responsible for the person who did the act is letting them free. Any country would be cross about this.

So fucking what if he gets a few months out and about before dying of cancer? Calling for the boycotting of Scotland for a decision made by a board of people in the Scottish prison system is just asinine. Pity the political atmosphere in the USA is slowly changing from the way it was during all the France-hysteria or I could be really cheap and make a refference to 1984 with the name of scotch being changed to 'victory gin scotch'. Double cheap-shot. My non-bitter opinion is much aligned with Sensei's.

Also the Boycott Scotland website was just... yeah. Maybe that's why no-one ever seems to listen to my arguments, I don't rip at cliched heartstrings with all my might like they're... I dunno. Snapped elevator cables and I'm the only thing stopping the carriage from falling. Or some other analogy that involves Herculean tugs-of-strings.

I don't know anything about any king of boycott, nor does it mean anything whatsoever, since anyone with the wherewithal to "boycott" the Scottish tourism industry was never going to Scotland anyway.

But as an American, I am pissed off that other people are pissed off at Americans for being pissed off.  The guy killed 270 people, he should have been fucking executed.  Oh so he's dying of cancer?  Let him die of cancer in jail.  Make no mistake, "Compassionate Release" is a euphemism for "we don't want to pay for his god-awful expensive end-of-life care and a funeral and all that crap, so we're kicking him out now that we're sure he's almost dead".  Which if you think about it, not only shows utter indifference to the living legacy of his actions, but is pretty damn cruel to him too.

So how is this boycott going to work exactly? People not going on holiday in Scotland?
And how are they going to enforce it? Mass brainwashing?

Oh yes, I had this trip to Scotland planned with my family. But now, with this boycott stuff, I think I'll stay at home. Sure.
And what about managers working with import-export. I'm sure there's people with regular business in Scotland. I really can't imagine a sane person screwing up his own interests for this fanatical bullshit.
To me, it looks like the average supporter of this garbage was not going to do anything in/with Scotland in the first place.

That site has great comedy value anyway. I mean:
"Freeing a terrorist in order to further ties with the tyrannical Libyan regime of Muammar al-Gaddafi and to further the commercial interests of British Petroleum in that region is repulsive and sickening."

Are you kidding me?
