Hanging
« on: August 24, 2009, 05:16:46 pm »

Is it possable to hang prisioners and other things with rope? Like build retractable bridges in a form of 3 by 3 and put a robe in the middle of it and desinate something to be tied on to there. Then dig a hole 3 by 3 2 tiles down and retarct the bridges? Would it work?

Don't think so. Toady might add something like it into the game in future releases.

You can, however, ATOM SMASH your dwarves. Much more fun :P

Ah, guess Phoenix already answered :D

Clarification: When a prisoner or animal is "tied" with a rope, they are prevented from walking more than one square away from it. If (for example by being dropped) they find themselves further away, they will walk back to the rope.

The only problem is that you can't build rope-thingies on top of retractable bridges. What you could do (I think) is this:
Code: [Select]
||||
iC++
|+++

|: wall
i: rope thingy
C: cow on top of the...
+: retractable bridge over a pit

When the cow is on top of the bridge when you retract it, it should hang around there. However, I never tried that and it doesn't actually damage the creature.

@rRandom832: With my method it should be one to the right and one Z-level down from the rope. Will the creature continue to fall? Will it stay hanging there? Will it warp back on top of the rope?
Try it! For SCIENCE!

The animal/prisoner gets released from the rope, AFAIK.

So it might die in an interesting and fashioned way ?

Last i checked the 1 tile in any direction was not likited to z level. So if you had a stairway next to a rope the animal tied there could still travel all the way up and down that stairway. So "tied to rope" does not respect z levels. It may have been fixed, but i do not think so.

I tried to make a hanging chamber a while back, as my goblin drowning chamber wasn't working.  A 3X3 room over a deep shaft, centred around a two-square walkway with a rope in the middle, surrounded by channels covered by grates linked to a lever.  Tied a cow to the rope, waited for it to get onto the grates, then pulled the lever.  As far as I can tell, it was released from the rope at some point, and fell in a splatter on the ground far below. So, not a total waste of effort, as it'll still kill whatever you attach to it.  (Also, my excavations uncovered a splash of magnetite, which was a bonus.)

I once did something like that.  Only I used a drawbridge, so that the goblin that happened to be chained up there would be flung out into the field outside from a deadly height where the siege that happens to be waiting outside can see it.  I called it a Foe-Flinger.

Believe it or not, I think there is a bloat or something about this.  Let's see...

Ah, yes.  Bloat 255:

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Apparently, dwarven restraints work on the honour system.

I'm talking about the bronze colossus. It's supposed to be made entirely of bronze.
But really he's just a softie inside. They all are really. When megabeasts come to your fort you never welcome them inside and give them a hug, do you. You heartless bastards...

I think we can all agree we need some new ways to kill stuff around here. Traps are fun, magma is satisfying, drowning is exciting, soldiers are cool, feeding them to zombies is delightfully evil but after you've done all these things I want new ways to kill!!! It's a shame we can't starve our goblin prisoners or drive them insane. Anyways, hanging is going to be AWESOME.

I was under the impression that they would, in fact, hang there, but not lethally. They'd just hang out until you found a way to get them back up.
