On topic: I mostly listen to blues while I play, but I think the original music really captures that desolate feeling of struggling to get by out in the wilderness.
On that note, I'd say instrumental guitar music would be the most fitting, perhaps some of the more downbeat "cowboy and western" style stuff.

I use soundsense, it has new background music, most of it is fairly good.Theres one song imparticular, though, Simon Swerwer-The Tankard Basher. I'm not sure why, but it just really feels like Dwarf Fortress, or at least sitting in a pub and drinking a shit load of ale... which is usually what my dwarves end up doing.

I usually play a huge drum solo, record it and play it while I play DF. S'yeah, id say epic drum solos :P
