Really, there needs to be more than one track in DF... It gets on my nerves for being too tight of a loop.

People may hate me for saying this but....I love playing the Fable soundtrack while I play DF.

I know, I know, Danny Elfman gets way too much work. But the Fable OST does a lot of things right.

It's got several themes: Sweeping epic, idyllic farmland, cheeky mischievousness and classic dungeon creep out music.

While some of those don't really work for DF, the more playful tracks are dead on for DF's style. That Bowerstone track, for me, totally makes me think of dwarves running around their daily lives, being dwarfy and getting into trouble.

Seriously what is up with all the Death Metal?

I think the problem here is that people are confusing there IMPRESSION of Dwarf Fortress with what the game actually is.
People think of all the 'fun' and the deaths, and killings, and explosions and the magma, and they think "Yeah! rock music! Head banging! Totally dude!"

But Background music in a game isn't meant for that.  The original guitar instrumental currently works PERFECTLY for the game as it is, because despite what WE do to the game, at its heart its a game about simple Dwarfs, out in the wilderness, trying to lead simple lives.  The very elegant guitar music perfectly complements this.

If you WERE ever to add additional music to the game, I would suggest a system where the music changes as your fortress grows.  That is a more logical approach then heavy rock Music blaring when you are milling around with 10 or so dwarfs...

You could have different music from when you goto Hamlet, to town, to City and finally Metropolis.

My own music suggestions?
Well if oyu mixed: THIS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biaFj0S1jcs
With THIS: http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR00638/
I think oyu would have a real winner. Both of them convey a busy growing city, without breaking frm a fantasy/medieval music feel.

As ofr a Metropolis sized theme, oyu can always do : http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=BA68851B2FAE6A27&search_query=koyaanisqatsi+the+grid

Ask not what the Dwarfs can do for you...
But ask.... why are they drunk all the time?

The last thread that asked this question was from 07 so I thought it was safe to ask it again.

So what music do you think works well with playing DF?
I usually listen to Led Zeplin because its pretty mellow for rock and their Lord of the Rings themed lyrics fit so well. Everything works well but Achilles last stand works particularly well for Adventure mod.

I tend to like Ayreon, Blind Guardian, any SNES-era console RPG music, or the like.

Have we already said "Bodies" by Drowning Pool?

Seriously though, and RPG music should work (8-bit / 16-bit) era.  I watch TV while strip mining so music doesn't really apply.

Here's a gift. SupraDarky's Best Video Game Music List Part 1

200 great selections, mostly console RPG music but also some Silent Hill, Resident Evil, even pokemon and pikmin and various others.

There are several more 200-song playlists as well... Enjoy, these should acquaint anyone with most of the classics.
