Teutus Secundus – The Guardsman who Never Served.
The prisoner looked up as the Inquisitor entered the rockcrete cell. He was bound to his chair, and acknowledging the Inquisitor was as much courtesy as he could show.
The Inquisitor closed the door and spoke. “Do you know who I am?”
A nod and a reply, “Yes Lord.”
“State your name.” The Inquisitor moved to a chair just inside the room.
“My name is Teutus Secundus, trooper in the Amris Graevus Security Force.”
“Do you know why you're here?”
Teutus hung his head. “I–I don't know.”
The Inquisitor sat down. “You are here because of the events that transpired six days ago. What do you recall that was important?”
“I was called to the company HQ. That was when I first saw you. My squad leader, Ersus, was off base and you needed to speak to him. I brought you to his apartment. He was buying some kind of book from someone, an off-worlder. You were looking through the book when Ersus pulled his pistol out. I jumped him and wrestled him to the floor. We brought him back here, to the cells, and we shut him away. You had me shut into the next door cell.”
“An accurate account of the days events. What do you remember of the next five days?”
“I was bound. I made my daily prayers to the Emperor. And I remember hearing the screams.”
The Inquisitor smiled coldly. “So it seems the cells aren't soundproofed against the screams of the guilty. Corporal Ersus, the squad leader, was purchasing a description of the religions that existed on Amris Graevus before Saint Josephus destroyed the heretics. He has been killed. His squad has been killed for insufficient vigilance. Which leaves the question, 'what to do with you?'”
The Inquisitor began polishing a bolt pistol and continued. “It's a simple question, and until four days ago it had a simple answer. But four days ago, the Amris Graevus governor's office finally forwarded a transfer notice. It said, 'Teutus Secondus, Trooper, is to be assigned to the Imperial Guard 37th Graevus Regulars beginning 974.M41.' Do you understand what this means?”
Mouth dry, Teutus simply shook his head.
“It means that you are not guilty of the negligence that lead to Corporal Ersus's heresy. Instead, I find records that you have been shirking your holy duty to serve for almost twenty years. This is a grave problem, and as an Inquisitor it is my happy privilege to correct this. All relevant records will be updated to acknowledge twenty-five years of service as the 37th Graevus Regulars liaison to the Amris Graevus Security Force. Twenty-five years of uninspired but passable work that ended today, when you entered the entourage of Inquisitor Ryhekuss. Do you understand?”
“Yes.” Relief was apparent in his voice. “Thank you, Lord.”
