It would be sad if playing the new version of DF prevented me from using my precious mods.  Also, will the improvements from d11+ be included in the next version?

Pretty much every mod will need to be updated in at least a minor fashion, yes.  Mods that alter creatures and entities will probably need to be mostly rewritten.  A lot of raw object types have changed dramatically to match the correspondingly large changes in the game.

Also, will the improvements from d11+ be included in the next version?

If everything works out, yeah.  There's an item for it in the Dev List, under "Final": "Merge with the 40d# stuff"
