Gasp! MURDER!
« on: August 24, 2009, 11:17:04 am »

I'm asking if there are any good murder mystery games out there. Preferably ones I can get wrong and fail and die, or something.

I played And Then There Were None. It was just OK.

If you like adventure games... Wich are totally different from what you're implying but they might entertain you anyway...

play the Trilby series...

In this order:
5 days a stranger
7 days a skeptic
Trilby's notes
6 days a sacrifice

Well, I don't know about good, but there are at least a few on the BYOND network. BS12 has rounds that are essentially murder mysteries in space.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

I played an online game called Sleuth a while ago, which is essentially a private investigator game. No dying in it though, as far as I recall but it was fun for a while

I highly recommend X days a Sauerkraut (sic) series, but if you are looking for a straight up whodunit, they might contain a little too much mysticism. (also TS isn't focused on the murder. And 6DAS isn't actually a murder mystery at all, but it's also the most crap one, so don't feel bad if you end up not playing it). That goes double for Ben Jordan, but as far as adventures go, it's a very enjoyable series.

Here are some murder mystery adventures I know of (come to think of it, I know of surprisingly few):

Commercial (abandonware):
Laura Bow series
Jack the Ripper
Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes
Crime City
Gabriel Knight series (with occult overtones)

Straight up whodunits:
The Shivah (the "demo" is a regular version of the game, which is missing some fluff (definitely several puzzles, and bonus features like author's commentary, maybe something else). then again 5 bucks isn't that much...)

Fantasy, mysticism, or occult:
Enclosure (con artist, arctic station, murders, it's like Whiteout was a game. Ok no, it isn't, but that would be cool.)
Comedies and parodies:
murder in a wheel (solve the murder of a hamster!)

I tried to play chess but two of my opponents were playing competitive checkers as a third person walked in with Game of Thrones in hand confused cause they thought this was the book club.

Laura Bow games were inmensely frustrating... if you forgot something in a previous stage you were screwed...

Gabriel Knight is awesome.

Enclosure might be a bit hard because it uses parser text like old adventure games but is AWESOME... Loved the ending scenes XD

Murder in a wheel is a pending matter... :P

Aww, I thought at first you wanted actual murder mystery games, of which I have quite a few favorites... but adventure games, not so much.

Right, I should play those later. I keep meaning to.

Secret Service is also cool. Whats it called/like/about?

*Much Text Here*

Alright, thanks for that, I'll check those out.

Don't have to be adventure games. Don't really know what else they could be, though, besides a mix of adventure and something else.

Well, you play as a defense attorney who basically has to solve murder crimes and find the real killer.  Has drama and comedy.  Half of it is talking to people while investigating and the other half is courtroom drama.
