mine would be to have a fortress crumble to Its end beacause your carpenter is too thirsty to make barrels. I had that happen once. fun. :P

I think that a prisioner holder chamber breakout would be pretty interesting, or gladiator gobos somehow making it out of the arena both alive and armed

My favorite is always the time that fire spread out from the volcano to engulf the ENTIRE map...killing every living thing on the entire map...except the fire imps.

Flooding every level of your fortress almost instantly due to a little accident with pressure plates, a ridiculously large dwarven cistern and lots of pumps.

I thought I was so smart. I thought I was fucking hilariously genius. I was going to own these Elves so fracking hard it their "tree spirits" would grow an ass just to feel sore, it was going to be awesome. I had set up floodgates at entrance and exit of my fortress and had redirected magma right next to it, with gates keeping the magma from flooding until the Elves were within reach. I had it hooked up to pressure plates in front of the gate so when the Elves walked on it, they'd meet a boiling hot demise. I cage'd all my animals so none of them would walk on it by accident.

I recieved a wave of immigrants right before the Elves appeared on the map and I thought nothing of it. They entered the fort, and all of a sudden boiling hot magma engulfed my entrance, sinking into my fortress before I got the chance to close off the floodgates to the entrance of my fortress. I checked by the magma gates and what did I see? A lone kitten, still standing on the pressure plate. It had came with the immigrants.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUn

Almost caused the end of my MP. I had to beat that guy up big time. No overtime pay for pulling that crap.

How about a modding mishap? I was trying to make the cave spider webs (the vermin, not GCS) burn up, but failed to realize that anything MADE of the silk also catches fire. If I hadn't looked around and noticed that more than the webs were smoking and that the dwarves were flashing red and orange and fixed the problem, my fort would have gone up in smoke, literally.

Okay, it wasn't a 'lose', but it had the potential.

i had a huge chasm underneath my fort once and the whole thing was connected only by the ceiling.

i got carried away and my lone miner who removed the support from my awsome fort suspended over a chasm to utilize it as a moat was the only one to survive. everything fell down the hole, including food......


he redug a fort and then died from me accidentally telling him to drill through another support and causing a cavin that opened the river next to the tunnel floodiing it....but not from drowning... carp are totally evil... worse than oldskool elephants.


and while it may sound sarcastic, this was completely accidental.... it was four in the morning and i had stayed up almost 36 hours just eating, bathroom breaks, and playing DF

I once tried to channel a brook around my fort to make a moat. Suffice to say I hadn't noticed it flooded everytime it rained. It was flooding at about twice the speed it took my miners to channel around my fort, and my entrance and farms were lost, but I had a floodgate in place to save the other levels. To make the best of it I ended up channeling into a noble's bedroom. His totally unreasonable and unnachievable mandates were crushed by a good few z-levels of water. But the fortress flooded. It was hilarious :P

My best loss was when I encountered the GMS (Giant Magma Spider, modded creature) I attacked it with felwargs (modded creatures immune to magma) and they attacked it under the magma. Turns out that they're immune to fire (meaning that they'll happily jump into magma) but drown pretty quickly in it. The GMS proceeded to slaughter all of my dwarves with nothing but a bruised eye. I've made them megabeasts now.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I build every fortress with floor grates in strategic locations. When I get bored, I pull a magic lever. If I've had a streak of proactive forethought, it would always completely flood within 30 seconds from cisterns specifically constructed for the purpose of flash-flood. To be symbolic, I sometimes lock the miners, smoothers, and refuse haulers who prepare them inside, as a kind of 'eliminate all witnesses' thing. It's easy to find the haulers who did it; I just lock all of them I currently have (Armok will know his own..?). Of course, I don't do it a lot, since I really hate wasting picks.
