Dwarfs: Gremthol(or somthing) The malice of destruction a Troll. I sent a pesant to act a s bait to draw him into a cage trap, however when I unassigned him he ran away from the escape hole... he then jumped into the bottomless pit falling 6 stories to his death. then a few dwarves went down to pick up the shield he droped and subsequently run away from the only entrance to the pit and get killed by said troll, I then draft the fort and lawnch them after the Troll losing my miner and three more dwarves before my axedwarf decides he has had enough booz he then tantrums and throws the barrel refusing to help. Then my Glass maker, who was a named dwarf for one of my friends ran down and began wrestling the Troll, they end up falling off the edge of the pit falling 6 stories and both live, however now the Troll is afraid of HoboKnife and refuses to fight, while Hoboknife seams to be having trouble finding the troll due to a missing eye and gray brain wound, eventualy they find each other and Hoboknife finishes the job. a quick digging from my only non insane dwarf (the axe dwarf went melancholy) digs down and frees hoboknife and once the axedwarf is given some food and water a migrant rush of nearly 30 dwarves arives.  :o

Kobolds- A Giant Cave swallow pesters my camp for a long time and finaly decides to attack my Kobold Project and kill my profesional carpenter! I send out my hunters and do some damage but nothing lasting but leaving 10 stuck in bone bolts. so I send my troops, my bowbold hits it in the wing a few times and then stops shooting for some reason, my other troops form a lopsided circle around the beast as my champion aproches. he leaps on the bird and proceeds to break every part of its boddy, and then to mangle every part of its boddy. once it is a horrible mess the champion decides he is tired and leaves the wretch with the rest of the squad. the bowbold takes two steps up to the Bird and fires a single bone bolt into the offending birds scull. I still haven't dealt with his sister, she doesnt bother me so, I leave her alone.

Skeletal Velociraptor, hands down. The bastard thing killed basically every single last dwarf I had. Which admittedly was just the starting dwarves.  But it did it on the reclaim, too. And /that/ reclaim. Then I gave up.

Epic win.

For everyone having problems with channeling all you have to do is channel stuff from up-staircases on the level below. The staircases support the tile until the miners remove it.

Ramp the area you want channeled from below, works wonders cause then all you need to do is remove all ramps later. Plus they can always get out of wherever the get stuck...

Yep, do that by default now, when I can help it. Sometimes you can't, though.

Another fave trick of mine is "percussive mining" -- dig a chamber above, mine a huge stone "bullet" using stairs, add a pillar and link that to a lever, clear all dwarves, and pull lever.

Works only if you are not 'channeling' over something that is already gone. (ie dug out underneath, Vertical tube, etc...)

With vertical tubes, I use the "percussive mining" method, really. Works out pretty good -- you just need to make sure that there are no excavated stairs in the area that you're turning into a vertical tube, and you should be all right.

...

Unless of course you have the children running around making a nuisance of themselves. GODDAMNIT KIDS.

Legendary Lands mod - Flame Maidens.
     Fire Imps - easy.
     FireMen ok, a decent challenge.
Flying Fire-Girl of DOOM - I don't do Magma on Legendary Lands anymore.  Not worth the headache... the one I get when I try to put my head through the monitor as the entire fort is wiped out, again.

Armok forbid I decide to try a magma pipe in an undead type location...

All of the little fishies that lived in the Stream of Carnage (yes, the actual randomly generated name for the stream) of my now fallen fort of Ancientcastle. I lost 1 of the original 7 right off the bat. Then the migrants came. I hadn't quite gotten to restricting traffic around the river and they were walking right by it. 7 dwarves died and 7 fishies got named. Eventually I got my revenge and sent out some crossbow dwarves to various places, unfortunately, through spore breeding, they repopulated and avenged their late brethren. I ran out of booze and 56 of my 101 dwarves went to drink from the stream. The carp slaughtered aboot 23, then the military dwarves came. Some survived, some were dragged under. The ones that survived drank bloody water then the tantrumming began. All but 16 dwarves survived. 7 were wounded, the rest were haulers, and there was a siege going on. They couldn't farm or do anything necessary to survive. The all died of hunger and thirst. Carp-1, Beanchubbs-0

Yikes, the Orcs have a nasty language.  Traditional foreplay would be right out for them; how would they ever "say my name" for one another?  No wonder Ocrs are always so bloodthirsty and violent, they're getting sub-par action.

Wolves keep mangling all my dwarves. But they only really kill hunters. My biggest enemy is my military. I have them on constant patrol because they already killed someone in the main military and injured their leader. I don't want champion and guard corpses strewn about from SPARRING.

Recently, batmen.  I embarked next to a chasm that divides the entire map, and that fortress quickly ended with batmen harassing and eventually killing all my starting dogs and 3 out of 7 dwarves.  They all dodged over the edge into the depths while trying to wrestle/hammer the irritating batmen, who liked to hang out either above my wagon or against the chasm wall where they couldn't be reached by xbow fire, but close enough to interrupt my miners trying to dig out the edge.
The next fort is going much better, and the chasm dwellers are going to get a nasty surprise this time - I've brought 7 crossbows and I'm making stacks of wooden bolts.

The difficulty of getting a good metal economy going without magma. Seriously, I've considered modding things to either make wood give more charcoal (a smelter reaction to turn a log into two refined coal?) or to strip the need for fuel for most smelter reactions (meaning fuel would only be needed for steel, forging, and melting, so you could refine ore for free). Never got around to it though.

Oh, my worst LIVING enemy? Orcs, though Tower Fort (my current experiment) is rigged to completely seal in event of emergency so they're not such a huge problem right now. Aside from that, I once had this really annoying noble with a thing for black bronze.

Low FPS. My forts will last for many years, during which time megaprojects are constructed... And still nothing topples my fortress. Until FPS drops below 20, at which point I can no longer stand playing the map.

Ambushes. Of any race. I can blanket my map with military dwarves, but without fail it's always Urist McLegendary, Civilian Who's Outside For No Known Reason, that discovers them. Or my Mayor's cats. All my Mayors love cats, and their cats always love running into ambushes.

Oh, and lately Orcs, because in my last few forts they keep showing up in ridiculous numbers, all mounted on Giant Wolf Spiders or Armoured Elephants, from 2nd Summer on.

Skeletal fishes.

"Oh look, a nice shiny river. I wonder what there is to catch in such a scary place?"
*Gigantic skeletal longnose gar jumps out of the water, lands on the shore, and eats the dwarf whole*

Thank Armok that skeletal carps cannot walk on land like other skeletal fish.
