I like keeping the graphics as old as possible.  It looks the nicest.

Oddly I found that some of the later Graphical upgrades actually were less interesting and in fact looked worse.

i noticed that after the second one. they then got a little better, and then Failed.

i basically had a rape-ship at the end of the game

Playing the game correctly, rape-ship reaches it's status halfway through. After that it becomes overkill ship.

I failed the second level repeatedly, but by the time I beat it every level after was just a case of hold down space, watch missile asplode enemies and coins jump toward me

And the last upgrade was just stupid. But I expect that to be intentional, that sometimes the old graphics are usually better than the new ones.

You mean like a lot of the early shifts to 3d that looked HORRIBLE relative to the nearly perfect 2d games?

Best example? Gabriel Knights Vs. Gabriel Knights 3

Honestly... The first had good graphics (the second had Live Action which is one of my personal favorite styles) and the second had GARBAGE!
