As per the aforementioned magma->obsidian drop, if you then drain the ocean around it, you can tidy the structure up, add windows, etc., and collect the excess obsidian for other uses, befor reflooding.
If you have enough magma and patience you don't even need to drain parts of the ocean. Just stack the underwater obsidian to the top of the ocean, so you can dig into the obsidian block and build your dwarven fortress inside. It's going to look more like, well, a cube than a fortress, but it's much less painful and much faster than draining parts of the ocean.

Draining the ocean is just a drop of magma and some lignite in a bin away.

I'm not sure if this would screw up the FPS, but why not have a series of atom-smashers take care of the situation?

Controlled drain, no materials that can't be disposed of, and it preserves the landscape... mostly.

Okay, so no obsidian could be farmed from it, but still...

How to set it up, however, would be a bit of a challenge.

Been done before, I believe. I saw a topic about two months back, no idea where it's gone now.

Anyone wanna own up? :P

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then you kill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.

im not entirely certain that im getting this, but is the implication there that atom smashers destroy liquids as well?

if so, then i have seriously underestimated their power. they are indeed godlike...

i think i already mentioned this in this thread, but opposed to carving out then flooding a fort, i dug rooms with lots of windows and things into the side of a big shallow canyon, dammed it then flooded it from the brook that was conveniently at the top of the cliff. it was originally to have lots of underwater walkways with windowed sides and stuff but i got impatient, so it just had 2 massive windows and some smaller ones. by massive i meen 3 z levels high. it did frustrate me how windows need to have a bit of floor to stand on, though. it ruined the look in 3dwarf.

They destroy everything except demons and wagons. Liquids included.
